very effective home-made sound proofing?

I want to stick a noisy server in a closet in a room where I study, so I have to find some way to quiet it (besides actually making it produce less noise). There's plenty of space in the closet, so what are the best bets for really blocking the sound using not-to-expensive items if the space it takes up isn't a big concern.

dpopiz, sticking you server in a closet will cut down on noise, but have you considered the cooling required to keep your server up?

i used 3/4" skinned self adhesive accoustic foam to line the inside of my case. low rpm fans and its a pretty damn quiet computer🙂 oh, i also use soft mousemats to isolate the case from the desk. can't hurt.

seen those bumpy mattress tops, those things which are supposed to be egronomic and what not. They make really good noise absorbers. My friend setup a small studio (for his small band) in one of his rooms. He says it works like a charm.

do becareful and don't skimp on quality. foam is very very flammable (almost like gasoline)

If you want evidence, look at what happened to "great white"

How effective do you want your soundproofing to be? You could simply line the closet walls with compressed fiberglass/felt, and stuff it with loose-fill insulation, but then you'd have major cooling problems unless you have a water-cooling setup with an external radiator.

you could carpet every single surface in the closet, that would kill the noise

of course, this sort of reminds me of a guy who called me one day

his computer was overheating so he thought he needed a new fan

i asked him where he had his computer and he had it in a little closet

and the little closet was getting hot

i told the guy he needed to vent the closet, not the computer
