Very disappointed in Ford quality (2010 Escape Limited)

Just wanted to relay a bit of my disappointment.. A good friend had a 2009 Rav4 Limited that was wrecked. She bought a 2010 Escape Limited to replace it (same exact options except the Escape has the sync pkg, no nav in the Rav4)

I am absolutely blown away at how 'shoddy' the Escape is compared to the Rav..

The ford has a keypad on the door to enter an unlock code.. It's so flimsy that the entire door panels flexes and pushes in if you try to use it. Door handles (ALL of them) are flimsy and feel on the verge of braking. The interior is crap, leather feels cheap, seats designed for fat people and feel like they'll break at any moment when adjusting, sync system is annoying to use (can't copy mp3 from disc, in general hard to learn), all of the vents feel cheap and have mold imperfections (as a matter of fact, lots of the rubber/plastic has imperfections), the dash 'looks' cheap, the wheels/chrome isn't very clear, it feels cheap when driving too (compared to the Rav)

From what I understand they were almost the exact same price too..

I am definitely not a Ford hater (I have a Ranger), and I didn't see the car before it was purchased or I would've said something.

She had to have a Ford, wanted a small SUV - maybe the lincs/mercs are better?

Escape hasn't really received Ford's revived interest yet. The basic underpinnings date back to it's release and it's only had some mild updates here and there. So yeah, I wouldn't expect too much from it. I suspect a re-work is in the future, but as far as I know there's not been any news of such things.

Its pretty much been the same vehicle for 3 or 4 years, hasn't it? The new one next year or the year after is going to be crazy better, totally new. With the better engines too.
I wasn't terribly impressed with the Escape either, especially when compared to the glory that is the 2010 Fusion.

I rented one a few years ago for 4 days and put close to 300 miles on it. Other than the horrible gas mileage (17 mpg average at best) and the fact that 5 adults don't really fit in it I didn't have any major complaints about it.

Had one as a rental recently. I actually thought it was a decent car in terms of features. The V6 had some kick, though was not light on the gas. I liked the Sync package. But yeah, the interior felt a little cheap...not GM cheap...but not up to Mazda3 quality either.

That's like comparing your Ranger to a new Nissan Frontier...they just aren't in the same ballpark. The Escape in a lot of way is the same vehicle that came out 2001. It was designed when Ford was still a wayward son.

given that you're the first person on the planet to complain about sync i'm going to discount your entire post as an utter fabrication.

Feels cheaper than a Toyota interior? wow!

Comparing Civic to Corolla I couldn't fathom the Corolla's interior when we were looking for a commuter, if Ford is below that then color me suprised

i bought a new car recently and i looked at one of the escapes, and while i loved how the exterior of the car looked, i did not like the interior at all.

its a shame because i love the New Tauras, love the Fusion, and i really like the fiesta, but the escape just didn't do it for me.

i ended up going with the new Hyundai Santa Fe which i absolutely love.

Yea ditto.

If you can't figure out sync you didn't RTFM or you don't have a compatible phone which you can find out when you RTFM.

Even my technology challenged father knows how to use Sync in my car.

The Escape just hasn't been updated yet. Calm down.

Hey skippy, no one was getting upset..

And those saying apples to apples - It's Ford's small SUV vs Toyota's small SUV, both optioned out. They were nearly the same price. It doesn't matter if it's been revamped or not, it's a POS in comparison...

....wait... or is the AT garage full of Ford fanbois?

Have you seen the new fusion with the colored grille? That fugly chrome shit is gone and it looks pretty damn good in black.

No one was trying to make excuses for the 2010 Escape. They were just saying that it's still a shitty product and that the 2011 Escape should be much better. 😉

As others have said, it's pretty much the 2nd oldest car in Ford's lineup short of the Ranger. It got a face lift and a minor refresh but it's still a 10 year old platform at it's heart.

It makes sense, I guess I'm surprised to see sooo many of them on the road when the other choices are much nicer for about the same price..

Pretty much all of the "problems" you describe are evident at a test drive, not something unexpected, like say acceleration from a Toyota 🙂. Obviously not "problems" for your friend since she drove away the Ford and not Toyota, it's not like she didn't know what RAV4 was like.
In any case, Escape is kind of like Focus, a refreshed pre-Mulally Ford product. It sucks you didn't like it, but I wouldn't judge new Ford cars by the Escape.

They actually are just now the same price due to Toyota's heavy incentives on all their cars. The Escapes have been had for way under MSRP for most of its life.

Old rumor that the Kuga replaces the Escape in 2012:

The look is already mature, so Ford had better bring it to North America sooner than later, or update it by then. Hot link:
