VERY COOL Speaker Trick

I'm sure most people will respond saying that this is nothing new and that they have heard of this... blah blah blah
I don't care though, I'm sure there is atleast ONE person out there who has not.

Anyway, here is the recipe:
1 laser pointer
1 empty soup can with both ends removed
1 small piece of reflective glass (break a compact makeup mirror)
Syran wrap
super glue
rubber band
computer speakers

Carefully glue the small piece of glass (taking care not to cut yourself) to the middle of a piece of syran wrap and let dry. Cover one end of the soup can with the syran wrap, with the glass piece facing outward. Use the rubber band to secure the syran wrap to the soup can. Setup the soup can contraption infront of the diaphragm of a speaker. Setup the laser inline with the glass shard but slightly angled so the beam will reflect off the glass and onto a plain ceiling or wall. I DO NOT recommend holding either the laser or soup can as people tend to shake.

Now the fun begins... Once you are setup, turn off the lights and turn on some music. Try different songs. Some songs yield erratic laser modulation while others result in three-dimensionally rotating objects. There is a Pink Floyd song that gives a rotating figure-8.

NOTE: THE BETTER YOUR SETUP, THE CLEANER THE LASER MODULATION WILL BE. IF THE SYRAN WRAP IS TOO LOOSE THE LASER REFLECTION WILL APPEAR FUNKED UP. ON THE OTHER HAND, DO NOT STRETCH THE SYRAN WRAP TOO TIGHTLY AS THIS WILL WEAKEN THE SYRAN WRAP AND CAUSE IT TO BECOME LOOSE. AIM FOR A CORRECT BALANCE.
DO NOT USE TOO MUCH GLUE. DO NOT USE A LARGE PIECE OF GLASS AS IT WILL BE TOO HEAVY.

Also, this might work better with musical beats instead of singing... I can't remember
 
So the reflective part of the glass is facing out, and the laser pointer is sitting somewhere outside the thing pointed at the mirror?

The mirror is facing outward... the mirror should not be inside of the can. Yes, the laser is outside pointing at the mirror.

So you have speaker -> soup can -> laser
 
Why do both the ends of the can have to removed? Sounds neat I may try it if I am bored later. Oh wait - broke my speakers last night 🙁 Gah nevermind 🙂
 
a variation on this, if you have a speaker big enough, tape a cd to the cone... fits a 6.5" speaker nicely
 
I haven't been able to find any pics and I don't have a digital camera. Yes, the soup can is on its side so that sound can pass thru.
 
That's a lot of work.
All you need to do is take...
1 speaker. 4" to 10"
some glue
1 small mirror (make-up thingie mirror)
4 pads of foam tape
1 tough latex balloon
1 laser pointer

1. stretch balloon taughtly (but not too much so) on the speaker and glue it
2. pads of foam tape on the corners of the mirror and then put that on the center of the speaker (on top of the balloon)
3. get the laser pointed at it (used a 3rd hand) and listen.

...that was my fourth grade science project. Sad But True looked the wierdest.

I did this in school as well. Took a small mirror, taped it directly to the woofer (10") pointied the laser at it and let it go.

Easy as pie.
