What gluttons we are.

Is the trans-siberian railway the ONLY lights across northern Asia? :p

It's TRUE! There are no Canadians!

Off Madagascar you have Reunion and Mauritius.

But I doubt anyone can figure out the light smack in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It took me a bit of research to find the answer.

Do you see Belgium ? It's the most brightly lit part of the map...
Our country is so small (11786 square miles) and we have so many motorways (all of them brightly lit) that you can see Belgium from the moon... Not kidding !

<< Good grief, great pic but don't the Canadians have electricity yet?! >>

Doesn't look like they do. Maybe Canadians are just fiction. Invented to make fun of them ? ;) ;)

So...what's the answer WoundedWallet?? Could it be a ship or offshore oil rig (probably too far out for that)

Hey, check this out?looks like NASA has fired up that satellite and has taken another photo of the earth. But given the current turmoil with the election in the U.S. it seems that South America has decided what side it is on in this bitter race.

Neat pic. More Canadians use light at night than I thought. ;) Not a single light source in Antarctica though...not even from that lonely permanent research installation. And I think I saw a light at Area 51...so did the radiation dissipate and the Men in Black return?

Ok, the island rigth in the middle of the indian ocean is Diego Garcia, an US navy base.

I got curious when I looked at a cheap map and saw nothing over there. I thought... that's the satanic Doctor No's island!! then my curiosity just went up when I looked on my world class world atlas and all I could see there where the words "Chagos Archipelago, (B.I.O.T)", the Maldives are the lights just above it.

So I went to the Net, trying to find out why such an unknown archipelago had such bright lights. And the first searches told me that it was an inhabited archipelago. I knew there was something fishy over there...

More searches yielded a WWII battle for the archipelago, that's when I discovered that B.I.O.T stands for British Indian Ocean Territory. But why did the British had such bright lights in the middle of nowhere? Further reading showed that the British own the Archipelago, but... they leased the southern most island, Diego Garcia, to the US. And it is now a huge Navy base. But you won't find any mention of it on your everyday maps.

BTW, I found this info on a page about coral reefs and they were bitching that the base was destroying the ecology over there. I knew there was something fishy.... :)

PS. sorry it took so long to answer, had a long day.

Nothing to be proud of IMHO. Using so much eletricity seems rather stupid to me. That's like burning money or even more that's the reason we people are so good at destroying the earth.
