Very basic digital camera question

I have a 4MP Minolta Dimage. Do I gain any detail or improve the pictures by using high resolutions if I'm just going to reduce them before printing anyway?

I have several resolution options and 4 detail settings. The highest compressed is "Fine" after that is TIFF.

Leave them at the highest resolution for printing. Why would you reduce them in size before printing?

I'd reduce them because a 1600x1200 picture is going to be around 16x12 inches which is much to big for a printed picture. I usually do something like 5x7 or smaller.

hmmm, thats not how it works exactly. At 300dpi, a 5x7 is 1500x2100 pixels.

Yeah, I leave my camera at 16x12 (only a 2mp camera) and when I crop the shots for a full-frame 4x6 the quality is noticeably reduced.
