Hello,

I'm stuck in a rut here, and perhaps you folks can help me out. I have an aging PNY Verto ti4600 GeForce4 video card. I want to buy a brand new Dell widescreen LCD, but I'm not sure if my card will support its max resolution. I'm thinking it will not, but I am not sure.

The max resolution on the Dell 2005FPW widescreen monitor is 1680 x 1050 @ 60Hz. Yes, my video card max resolution is higher than that, but the aspect ratio is also different. Will my card work with this monitor? From the way people are talking, the upgrade path is a no-brainer and any decent video card will support this resolution.. or maybe they're not taking this into consideration?

Just to clarify... I'm not concerned about games, because I know some do not support the widescreen format (newer ones do). I'm worried about regular Windows XP Pro and having the 1680x1050 resolution on my desktop (and all desktop apps).

Help!

Theres an option in the geforce properties tab called "change resolution", this allows you to add any width/height/refresh resolution. I just tried 1680x1050 on my gf4 4600 and it worked, so give it a try.

Thanks for the info... now that I'm home, I see that you can add resolutions. Apparently this is not recommended (a warning pops up, the text thereof I cannot recall) :/ But! Yes, it is possible. Did you try your experiment on a widescreen LCD, shabby? :)

My remaining problem is that my card supposedly only supports 1600x1200 on the DVI output. I've tried using a few higher resolutions with my existing monitor and they display, but most of my screen runs "outside" of my existing monitor.

I'm not so sure I should try for the widescreen... maybe I'll just go for the 2001FP, which is a regular 4:3 20" LCD.

The .inf file on the CD that ships with the 2005FPW adds the resolutions to your card when you update the monitor driver. The description of the monitor should change from the generic "Plug and Play Monitor" to "2005FPW (Digital)" and the 1680x1050 resolution should then be available.
