Verizon's Tiered Data Plans: Expensive

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/2...-verizon-july-7-packages-start-at-30-for-2gb/

Data plans:

2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

If you would like to add tethering on to any of those packages, you can purchase 2GB of data at an additional cost of $20 per month.

Data plans w/ tethering:

4GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month
12GB – $100/month

If you go over your purchased amount of data, it will cost you $10 per 1GB.

Gotta laugh at the people who wanted tiered data because they thought it would lower their bills. Now, you'll be paying the same amount of money, for less data. These aren't supposed to drop until the 7th, if you want that unlimited 4G, get it in soon.

wow, that is quite expensive... data should be half those prices at worst.... Looks like I'm sticking with t-mobiles 3g+ speeds for now...

Conveniently, launching about the same time as Movie Rentals from Android Market. Netflix has been slow with support, licensing issues and probably carrier contracts too.

These plans look terrible.

Droidlife says that existing customers may be able to upgrade after 7/7 and still keep their unlimited plan. There are also rumors about a family data plan. I have an upgrade available so I need to decide how to play this in the next two weeks. Hopefully more info will come out.

Dammit spent too much time with the formatting and you beat my thread!

But yeah those prices are crazy, and after 12 years of service with Verizon and currently out of contract it'll definitely have me looking at other providers.

😛

If AT&T buys TMO, then your options do become very limited. Sprint 3G is pretty bad, and their WiMAX coverage is a joke. 🙁

And I like Verizon's coverage and reliability, and their LTE works fantastic here but with streaming music or watching Netflix I don't want to have to worry about paying an extra $10 just to watch a movie on my phone. The article offers a glimmer of hope saying that current customers may be able to upgrade and keep their plan after June 7th, guess I'll take a wait-and-see approach and hope my next phone (if they honor that deal) lasts me for a very, very long time.

ouch, that's a lot. i'm really worried about what will happen to my $25 true unlimited data on tmobile if/when the buyout succeeds 🙁

Tmobile is no better. 2gb data for $30 and then throttled to EDGE speed after. Sounds like business as usual for the US carriers.

same as AT&T prices

i used to have unlimited but went to the 2GB plans. i rarely hit 1.5GB a month and my wife is 200MB to 500MB

5 dollars more per month, on average, than AT&T. And it doesn't change the fact that you were paying 30 dollars for unlimited and now you'll be paying 30 dollars for 2GB. Your bill says the same, while your service goes down.

Let’s look at how they compare to AT&T’s tiers:

200MB – $15/month
2GB – $25/month
4GB – $45/month

So each plan is essentially $5 more per month, which Verizon will likely justify by saying that they offer a more reliable 3G network and a faster 4G LTE network. We knew they are coming, let me know what your thoughts are.

since the average is 500MB per month per user it really hurts me that someone using 5GB or more to constantly stream media or do whatever has to pay their fair share for bandwidth

glad to see phone companys are following ISPs in offering and promoting faster and faster speeds and then capping the shit out of you so you cant even use it the way its advertised

wow those prices are ridiculous. i'm already unlimited so i should be fine but still, that is whack. i don't think i really use over 2gb/mo anyways though.

That is fucking robbery. I would do without a smartphone with those prices. Thank god I have Sprint with unlimited for whats soon to be half the cost. And yeah anyone who thought tiered pricing would mean lower costs for low usage people.... wake up call!

Price gouging FTW!

same here

i'm on a 4 line family plan so my Inspire costs me $25 a month extra. if i was single i would probably have a dumb phone and a tablet. i use my ipad a lot more than my inspire and my old iphone 3GS

Again, you're still paying the same amount of money per month for less. $30 for 2GB vs $30 for unlimited. A 2GB plan should be less than half the unlimited plan, 15 tops.

i'll stick with unlimited att @ 30, thanks.

AT&T likes to 'upgrade' its users though. 😛 Better stay off the Hulu and Netflix. 😉

But but but I'm not paying for the high usage people!!!!! Even if my price doesnt go down for using less!!!! 🙄

in most cases corporate email uses 200MB or less a month

I averaged about 50 mb/mo(which made that 15 buck premium so bogus for my blackberry)

but I dont get that much email :awe:

but Im more curious what they will do to our dataplans. we all have unlimited data

T-mobiles 2gb plan is $20, 5gb for $20 and 10gb for I don't know how much.
Their prepaid $70 plan (or cheaper if you buy the refill cards online) is 5gb.

At least they don't do overages.
