I used the following to activate 3G on mine:

  • Go to the ThunderBolt's phone dialer. Enter ##778# and hit Send.
  • You'll get a pop-up labeled EPST, with the choice to "View Mode" or "Edit Mode." You want "Edit Mode."
  • You'll be asked for a password. It's 000000.
  • Now flip down to "Modem Settings," and then choose "Rev. A."
  • Change the setting from eHRPD to "Enable," hit OK, then press the Menu button on the phone and tap "Commit Modifications."
Have been using it in 3G mode all day, the default is Edge, god it was slow...

Confirmed... 3G only. I had ready about this last night.... but just kind of assumed it'd be back up by now. Really really terrible... if I were paying for the plan myself I'd be screaming bloody murder.

Thats bullshit. You shouldn't have to go through nonsense to activate 3g. If 4g is not available it should happen automatically. Its not like their coverage is thorough. I seriously doubt too many people are able to get it at home AND work. They'd have to hop on 3g once in a while.

In Verizon's defense, 4G is the same price as 3G, only difference is the phone. And the 4G is unlimited with current contracts.

I expected some teething problems, and am sure they'll bring it back up soon.

Also, shorty, the ThunderBolt is a bit of an engineering kludge, it has a CDMA radio with voice, edge, 3G, and it has an additional hotspot 4G chipset (that's part of the reason it's so hard on batteries), 2 seperate radios...

That being said, you'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands even today :D

Surprised the outage has been this long. This kind of thing happens, but usually its pretty brief.

Mines connected to 3g without doing anything special. I don't normally get 4g where I am though.

Mine was too, until I got to work earlier. Dropped to 1X then. Hasn't left since. The building doesn't get good signal regardless, but it was destroying the battery trying to get the 3G earlier.

It depended on the market (geographical area) you were in when they set up your phone, I'm in a solid 4G area, so they didn't enable the 3G. Not sure if I need to manually switch it back when the network is up or not.

If one does the steps in your OP, will we have to do anything once Verizon pulls its head out of its behind?

Don't think the battery was charged full then. Shouldn't drain that fast. :p

Still stuck at 1x in NY. Annoying, but I can't complain as I use Wifi 75% of the time.

Edit, just checked again. It's back up.

I guess Verizon for some reason told HTC not to include a 4G on/off widget like they did on the Evo which is weird.

So this is affecting all what... 12, 13 people with LTE coverage? :p

Verizon has LTE in every NFL city, so probably quite a few people have it. The Thunderbolt sold a boatload too, clobbering the Vzw iPhone 4 in the process.

Conspiracy theorists claim the 4G outtage is to take make the white iPhone 4 launch look better. :p

That's exactly what I was thinking when I read all those Thunderbolt reviews when it came out. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Nah, nothing like that at all.
eHRPD and LTE share a lot of common points. All UE's (LTE slang for a device) is eHRPD capable. The trick is that it still uses all the EVDO Base stations, it's just routed to the evolved packet core via a HSGW instead of a PDSN. This way you can maintain your data sessions between the two technologies in an active mode handover. The IPV6 tunnel for LTE when you hit fringe coverage, and the IPV4 tunnel for eHRPD.

From what I understand its that if you were in a region with 4g when your phone was initially setup you will not connect to the standard 3g service correctly. Something about they use a special 3g for thunderbolts that can switch more quickly with the 4g service.

That is why you have to change your modem setting. And once 4g returns you should change it back.
