Verizon Wireless to start implementing New Data Requirement for "3G" phones?

can someone say what the fuck?

Any phones sold by verizon categorized by them as 3G mulimedia phones will now have to have a mandatory data plan for new customers/plans or those that make "certain accounts changes" going forward?

We’ve been told that Verizon Wireless will be switching around some of their 3G data plans for handsets starting January 18th.

Supposedly, all 3G-capable phones, Rev 0. and Rev A. will now require a minimum $9.99 data plan which includes 25MB (and also includes mobile email). The 75MB plan is reportedly going away to be replaced with a $29.99 unlimited option (including mobile email). The only exception to the rule are the PTT phones.

LOL, one of the comments was "If I were to pay that much more for Verizon, I’d expect to be able to teleport myself across their network. "

WOW that sucks. All these touch screen phones that don't require data plans now are going to require them from now on which sucks.

20c a MB after. What a bunch of fucking crooks. They should be tossed in jail along with ATT and anyone else charging such prices for things where people can and do go over.

Yeah it's total bullshit. I think I went in on the fucking day they changed the plan. I was gonna get a Rogue, upgrading from my current Chocolate that I got two and a half years ago. Now my options are down to only the enV3, which didn't need an extra $10 shitty data plan. I didn't bite because after 30 months I didn't want a sideways upgrade plus a keyboard.

when did you go in that they changed the plan? it says this is a 2010 thing. i just ordered the alias2 today to get in before the change tooks place.

I dont see how much longer I will be with verizon because there are less and less phones to be able to get with my grandfathered plan which is i guess, what their plans are.

I've had my Alias 2 for six months now. It's a nice phone. The e-ink keyboard is impressive.

I have an HTC Titan (Verizon XV6800) and was able to get that without any data plan. Treos fell into the same category... both are even smartphones. But even if my next phone requires a data plan, wouldn't you be able to cancel it after a couple months? Sure it adds overall cost but if you want the phone at the reduced cost bad enough...

... yet another reason why contracts and plans etc suck. I use my phone as a phone. No contracts, no plans, no BS, just $5 per month.

It's probably not going to be long before all carriers require a data plan.
Considering the networks are basically becoming pure data networks anyway (using VOIP), there won't be any technical reason not to, so might as well include it and charge for it.

The only thing keeping me from a smart phone is the ridiculous data plan.

Buy an unlocked phone and use it over wifi.
Also, data plans are data plans, if you get the $10 a month plan (don't tell them you have a smart phone!), it'll work the same as the $30 smart phone plan.

True, that's a good way to save some bucks. Any "plan" will still cost you $60 per month no matter what though. A rip for sure.

Uh....look at your calendar. Its 2010 last I checked.

they started requiring data plans for smartphones here about 1 year or so ago, which is why I have a sway instead of something else.....

so glad my wife has the EnV2 and not the 3(I think)

I don't see how this can be a blanket statement b/c there's still a lot of areas, like where I live, that you can barely get a signal never mind a fucking 3G network.

Does a tube of ky come with that new plan add-on? better get that env3 I've been promising my daughter this week I guess. Verizon doesn't know when to quit.

This is retarded. I don't agree with requiring data plans on smartphones, granted I also don't see the point of having one without it but the consumer should have the choice. They can easily block data from those who don't want it. It is obviously just another way to wrangle more money from the consumer.

wife just got the env3 a week or so ago. IIRC, she was only limited to the env3 and alias2 because those were the only two phones with a keyboard which didnt need an additional plan. I guess that's changing. This is total BS IMO, because I have the alias2 and I never use the internet. I just use it for phone calls and texting

i believe 4G is all IP, in which case there should only be a data charge. not minutes, not texts, not pics, not whatever. just data.

unfortunately it'll never happen that way.
