So has anyone tried Verizon's PTT service yet? If so, what have your experiences been? I'm going to get this as soon as they come out with more phones that are PTT enabled. Sucks that I got the T720 less than a year ago.

Is it correct to say that PTT service will not go across carries?

If so, I would imagine that Nextel will remain at the top.

No, I don't belive that Nextel subscribers would be able to PTT Verizon customers. Verizon is the biggest cellular carrier, just a matter of time before they over take Nextel in the PTT category as well.

You are mistaken. I live in California, and it is probably one of the best services. Verizon and Nextel's service in California are the best. Cingular, AT&T (GSM), T-Mobile, all pretty much stink in California. I frequent the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles area and Nextel has given me the most consistent service, hands down.
I disagree with your evaluation with ATT.
I have very little problem with signal. Ther may be more users of available bandwidth during the day, but I find very few areas I can't get signal. I even beat the Nextel crowd out in the Central Valley, where we go fishing.
Cingular is total suckage.
AT&T beats most carriers , in most areas across the US , although Verizon has made great improvements. imho.
Job uses Nextels. Pretty cool to PTT and get an answer rather than waiting for phone tag. NoCal Nextel seems pretty good so far, to amend my ATT preferences.

I've been looking for any reason to switch from Sprint to Verizon, but I ain't paying an extra $240/yr. just to get connected quicker.

When I used Nextels they were not speakerphone only. You could push a button and hold it up to your ear like a regular phone.

Yes, I own a nextel, and you can switch it from speakerphone to normal for the PTT.

I disagree. With Verizon enabling PTT service, the true flaws in 1xRTT and 3G CDMA are discovered. When verizon says Push To Talk, it is actually Push To Wait. A friend of mine has a Verizon PTT phone, and when you hit the PTT button to connect to a person, there is sometimes up to a 20 second delay (that I have experienced). With my Nextel it has never exceeded 2 seconds. Plus, the delay on Verizon's end from speak to hear is unacceptable. My father has been using Nextel since it came out for his business, and they have never had major problems. Also, when number portability comes out, Verizon's whole market strategy of one number for both will fall through. If you take one number, and transfer it to Verizon, PTT won't function correctly. Nextel implements two number (PTT Number, and Phone Number).

Ditto. My family owns a construction company, we will be remaining with Nextel. An associate construction company will also be remaining with Nextel. The school district that I work for will be remaining with Nextel.

My brother tested the Verizon PTT phones to see if our company would want to switch... and we decided that it would be more of a hassle, for less quality, than it was worth. At the school district, we have crystal clear signals, and we rely on Nextel phones for nearly everything - including time sensitive communications. Nextel has yet to let us down.

I agree on the numbering strategy - I pondered that a few months ago when Verizon announced that they were releasing PTT technology.

I'm hooked on Nextel. Not going to budge... (and if one of the companies forces me to... I'll probably wind up carrying one phone for each carrier) :(
