Wow that's pretty bad. While 4chan is quite a bad site, it should not be the ISP's right to block anything.

TBH I think eventually the US will be like china and block lot of sites. Maybe not as bad, but I could see them do it. They'll probably start with stuff like torrents as part of some stupid anti piracy crap. I can picture it happen eventually.

Many ISPs in the US already either block or severely limit torrents.

I don't disagree but I'd be pissed if I were a Vz customer. I don't need you filtering my internet, thank you very much.

ed zachary. verizon isnt my net nanny, ill not go there if i think it is shitty content. i do see a good use for that board, but /b/ is the cesspool of which they speak, definitely.

And they should imo. Pirating is stupid and people who do it should be punished somehow. I know legal things are transferred with torrents but be honest...90%+ is illegal. Plus, go the fuck outside instead of sitting in front of the computer all day. If people would do that, we wouldn't be having any of these issues.

If they feel they can block 4chan...they will start blocking other stuff...this is just the beginning!

Not ALL torrents are illegal, and pirated software.

Personally I use torrents for linux distros and whatnot.

But 4chan your place of choice for downloading Linux distros? That's like me going to a whore house to find a wife.

Like Steve alluded to, we will continue to rationalize away personal freedoms or choice for the good or sake of the communities. There was a time when people rebelled against building clocks in town squares because people did not want to be controlled by time - just a thought.

And I agree with SphinxnihpS on the matter of contract. I would consider it a implied warrantee of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. However if verizon wanted to disclaim that warrentee for a particular or meaningful reason for business sake, I don't see why they couldn't. Would it be good for business? Not so sure.

It should not be up to an ISP to dictate what is right or wrong. Piracy is a way of life in the cyberworld. Nobody is going to stop this.

Read your contract. Perfectly fine for them to do so.

Verizon Wireless (formerly Alltel) customer and it's working fine for me. Sounds like I'm in the minority on this, though.

The site comes up on my Droid. However, in both the default and the Dolphin browsers the popup disclaimer for /b/ wants to scoot offscreen and I can't seem to press the "I Agree" button. Either I suck at pressing buttons or the browser sucks at displaying that 4chan content.

But there doesn't seem to be a block for me.

The tip is to open in stock browser, and then zoom out as far as possible. Or at least enough so that whole box shows up in the window. It was giving me trouble as well. However the site works fine on my droid.

Well isn't that a bitch...

I hate companies limiting consumer freedom, but there is little that anyone can do about it.

I believe you have to go to one of the subforums that uses the img servers.

You are correct. I checked it again, and was able to accept the disclaimer, and then when the browser tried to go to boards.4chan.org, it failed.

Their network, their rules. I'm protecting private property rights and the desire for people to read what they sign. You know, that personal responsibility thing that seems to be lacking so much with the entitlement mentality.

The main problem with 4chan is /b/. The rest of the boards are fine. I found a lot of info browsing some of the others boards. Still, /b/ is not a reason for Verizon to block 4chan.

I can get to /b/ on my Verizon Blackberry.

Love or hate 4chan is obviously a matter of opinion, but I would hope that most people think that a provider should not be dictating which websites I can or cannot go to.

Yeah, but let's have a look at a typical service contract for a moment:

Section 265 (6);
any above clauses notwithstanding, we can do anything we feel like, anytime we want, bear no responsibility for quality of service or availability, and we can change anything about the service, including the price, anytime we feel like it, and you'll still be locked in for 3 years.

Companies throw everything they can think of into those agreements, and they know much of it would never win in court; they also know chances are it will never go to court, because no individual customer will ever be better off paying a lawyer than they are just bending over and taking it.

A 4chan administrator going by "moot" wrote that Verizon had been contacted and a Verizon representative said, "You'll need the customer to call to request it be unblocked."

The same user "moot" reported yesterday that after contacting the Verizon Network Repair Bureau the response received was that the site had been explicitly blocked.
Ah yes, I've heard rumors about this "moot" person, something about him being the creator of 4chan.

A "4chan administrator" and "user." R'spect, yo.
