Verizon vs. AT&T

My verizon contract is about to be up and now that I've been doing some iPhone development I have contemplated switching to AT&T so I can get an iPhone. Currently my only app works on iPod and iPhone (I have an iPod) however I want to do something that requires the phone functionality. Also, the bill would be cheaper through AT&T.

My main concern is the service of AT&T. I live in the DC Metro area so it would mainly be around here.

I am just wondering if there is anyone who is close to this area (or in general too) who has used both providers for a good amount of time to give some input on the quality of one vs the other.

I'm not interested people simply saying one is better than the other if they haven't really used both of them extensively. I just want to know the pros and cons of both when compared to eachother.

I know one thing that I had heard non-verizon people say around here is that they heard Verizon works while in the Metro, which is completely false, other than some very specific stretches or at stops.

So I don't really want to know what people have 'heard' vs what is an actuality.

I know there are still rumos about iPhone coming to verizon, but nothing is in solid stone yet.

I have never used it in DC, but in Atlanta I have never had a problem (AT&T iPhone 3GS user). A lot of my family had Verizon and I was the only one that could keep a strong signal in Grady Hospital in downtown.

One of the complaints I hear a lot is coverage. I have had very little problem with getting any signal anywhere and the only places that I cannot get signal at all, none of my friends with Verizon can get it either.

The point is, if you want the phone do it. If you don't like you can always switch back in a year or two.

I have ATT and they have very spotty service on the Metro. I ride Blue to Springfield.

Verzion is getting a iPhone soon.

I might go with cricket or some other all in one. But I also am not a phone queen so as long as it works.

I have never had "good" service with AT&T since I got them almost 2 years ago.
Ever since the iOS4 update on my iPhone 3G, AT&T service is horrible.
It shows full bars and 3G, but it acts like it is 1 bar or less.
My phone bars freeze and show a certain setting, but acts differently until I reboot it.

I am definitely looking forward to Verizon's iPhone.
I do not recall any problems with Verizon for the 8 years I had them before.

I am also thinking about going back to Verizon via a Droid.

Yea I'm not too worried about it actually working on the Metro, that was just one of the things I had 'heard' from someone who hadn't actually used Verizon but they thought that about Verizon, which is why I want information from people who have actually used it.

How is the actual reception and service around VA? I live in Rockville and work in Crystal City, and I don't stray much from the DC Metro area in general.

Uh guys, the Verizon iPhone is purely a rumor. Just as its been for the past few years. If you're holding your breathe for it, you're going to be long dead.

There are dead zones while riding the metro near the air port.

But for the most part I get decent coverage. Rossyln I get nothing indoors, even near windows. But do ok once I am away from any buildings.
Many times I get dropped calls even though I show 1-2 bars.

Damn, yea see that is pretty annoying. (the part about not getting service in buildings)

And yea the Verizon iPhone is nothing but a rumor at this point still, at least that is what I've been able to find with my research.

Might want to read the news today and get caught up.

Reports say it is a done deal, no longer a rumor.

Update: The WSJ udated the story to be more clear, "Apple Inc. is making a version of its iPhone that Verizon Wireless will sell early next year." So it's not just a generic CDMA iPhone that may or may not end up on Verizon Wireless. The WSJ also added that the CDMA iPhone 4 variant will be built by Pegatron and would only work on a CDMA network (i.e., it's not a dual-mode GSM/CDMA device). Also, according to one source, VZW has been working with Apple to test its network and adding additional capacity to avoid being overwhelmed a la AT&T.

link me to the forum that is dedicated to services and sure i'll post it there.

this isn't a question in regards to the phone specifically but more oft he service.

You used the word iPhone 4 or 5 times in your post and it's kind of self evident that the gadgets/phones forum would imply service for said devices.

We had ATT wireless since when it was first called Cingular. Even living in an area with no 3g I still had problems with it. Dropped calls were just the norm. We finally got too frustrated trying to deal with that mess and then ATT support, and we switched to Verizon. I've yet to experience a single problem with them (apart from some technical glitch when I was in bum fuck Texas), and very happy we made the switch. I'd much rather have an iPhone on Verizon.

My issue is that I have zero interest in buying an iPhone 4 in January. By that time, the tech is 6-8 months old and it seems stupid to waste your once-every-two-years subsidiary on that. If it comes to Verizon, I'm waiting for the 5, if it's good. Otherwise I'll just get the newest and best Android option.

I live in MA/NH where it seems most people have VZW, but I have AT&T. If you go into the white mountains or something there are places where VZW has service and AT&T doesn't, but not around metro areas. I've traveled to Arlington a dozen times for work and have never had issues with getting service there either.
