That is AWESOME!!! My dad is currently stationed in Okinawa and the only way to get in touch with him is through a Vonage account, but half the time he's travelling throughout SE Asia. This will make it a lot easier to get in touch with him!!!

Way to go Verizon!!!

Hmm. Does Verizon allow data-only plans on smartphones though? I didn't think they did.

I know T-Mobile does, specifically targeted at the deaf and hard of hearing, but I don't know about Verizon.

EDIT: They do.

In case the link doesn't work, it's $55/mo for unlimited messaging and data on a smartphone and 25 cents per minute if you do make voice calls. $35/mo for unlimited messages and data on a non-smartphone with a 40c/min voice rate.

It also says you have to go to a VZW store for the $55/mo smartphone non-voice plan and may have to "provide appropriate documentation." So it might not even be available to everyone.

I'm pretty sure most providers do not allow only data plans except for very specific circumstances. If they did, then everyone who uses a smart phone could just use VOIP and pay $30 a month for unlimited use.

Right, but even with T-Mobile I was under the impression you had to document that you were actually deaf. I could be wrong though.

what is this plan then?

I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything, I just don't see anything on there about documenting you're hard of hearing or deaf.

I'm curious b/c I'm seriously contemplating a Nexus One and if I could make my 15 minutes of calls or whatever I use a month over VOIP, I'd definitely do that and save some $$.

Well I did qualify that with "I could be wrong". The question would then be does T-Mobile allow Skype traffic over 3G? (this is an irrelevant question for me as T-Mobile's 3G coverage is so minimal in my area it would be useless).

They all allow data only plans for laptop connection cards. I have had two - now one.

They have allowed some of the Nexus One unsubsidized phones to be data only, don't know if they continued to allow it though. (TMobile)
