Verizon selling 'double data' plans?

Bateluer

Lifer
This is very good news, considering I'm coming over from sprint for either the razr or nexus, and have 4g here

Though I bet it's only for like the first 3 months or something

Its onlyfor a limited time. I also saw some new phones that are coming down the pipeline but i cant reveal them yet. One in particular is pretty damn cool.

You're a big tease

I didnt mean to be. I work for the company that does the VZW ads and get to see stuff that doesnt hit even the leaked sites yet. They probably get it from us but who the hell knows. Anyway, yeah, a decent phone is coming from a company no one expected to hear from ever again. 🙂

Two questions:

Do you think this will last till end of Nov; and is it for the life of the contract ?

Don't pull a Sharon Stone if you aren't putting out. You should have just said "It's only for a limited time" and stopped right there.

Oh sure, that's what all the girls say.

Hmmmm.. almost dead cellphone company? I'm going with Tandy

Still a major downgrade for anyone on the old unlimited plans, but if you joined the party late, might be worth investigating.

in just a year, VZW has become a total scam, i got my droidx on a one year contract with unlimited data.

Now everything is two year, and tiered data plans.
In the meantime, VZW makes more money than ever;

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/21/verizons-q3-earnings-on-track-with-revenues-up-5-4-percent-to/

"there are plenty of double-digits in Verizon's data revenue figures: it made $22.22 from each postpaid retail customer for data usage alone"

$22 average profit on data??
If the typical data plan is $30, that is something like almost 300% profit margin.

needless to say, i am looking to switch to something less scam.

Um I wouldnt put all the blame on Verizon. Every company started the 2 year contract and started cutting their data.

maybe not, but then the next logical extension is the entire wireless industry is a scam.

That's just how duopolies work, everyone should hope the feds ultimately block the T-Mobile purchase. Regional carriers and MVNOs in the industry certainly have to compete on price.

The gross margin you calculated should be ~ 73%, very healthy indeed but comparable to Intel CPUs and markedly lower than software licenses. Apples to oranges, but scam is likely too strong a word to tar the entire industry with.

How is that a scam? If you agreed with the terms then you are getting exactly what you contracted for.

Cost has nothing do with price in a free market economy. These guys are not here to provide a convenience for us, they are here to make money - as much as possible. If you don't like it then don't buy it - if enough people agree and cancel their service the price will come down.

i am out of contract and i am not signing another one, especially since the terms are even less favorable now.

LOL cost has nothing to do with price?

Yes it's a free market, and yes everyone works to make a profit, but conversely, consumers are free to point out when I or any other customer is getting lubed and bent over so buyers can make better informed decisions.

If the auto industry worked like this, people would be buying accords and camrys for 40K on a 20K invoice, and the outcry would be enormous.

At anyrate, you should tell me what stuff you like so I can sell stuff to you...

Yes, that is exactly right - the price of a product or service has nothing to do with what it costs. Price is based on what the consumer will pay and nothing else.

Don't you think that Honda and Toyota would work on 200% (or 500% for that matter) margin if they could get away with it? You are free to offer whatever service or product you like at whatever cost you can get away with just as I am free to tell you that I will go elsewhere or elect not to take the service.

You are only getting lubed if you elect to take the service. If you don't like then don't buy it. It's all about choices. There are budget mobile services out there - you are free to use them.

Personally I am waiting for something on the low end. A reasonable data plan in the 10-15 dollar range. With data in the range of 500MB-1GB area. I only use 200-400 megs of data a month on my phone but stuck with the expensive plan that I don't need.

you would be a great customer to have

As someone who picked up his Bionic in September this is great to have. While I watch my data religiously and only use Pandora/Slingbox while on Wifi and only use about a gig a month this will allow me to actually use my 4G to stream video without being paranoid over my data. I disagree with the data caps but props to Verizon for actually allowing 4G phones to use their 4G.

Can't be Sony, since we've seen their HD device. I'm guessing LG -- didn't they have their own HD screen in production a while back?

RIM/HP = ha ha ha

Or maybe it's Casio. 😀

Just tell us how far away the SGS3 is!

I called Verizon this morning after reading about this plan. The cs rep gave me unlimited data for $29.99 instead, for the life of my plan. I have only been with Verizon for 2 weeks.
She said it was a promo in their system & was still available, so she changed my 2gb plan to unlimited. Too awesome.
