Verizon 'Save' Plan - $50 Unlimited Talk/Text + 1GB Data

Hey Guys-

I called Verizon to ask about the $60 2GB plan mentioned at the link below but found it out was replaced with a $50 1GB plan.

http://www.droid-life.com/2014/03/13/verizon-save-plan-75-single-line/

I was originally on a Verizon Corporate discount account with 900 anytime minutes (w/ Friends & Family), 1000 txt and Unlimited Data. It was costing me about $88 per month for that line.

Since it was my wife's phone, she only needed about 500-750MB of data per month. So I switched her over to this $50 Save plan and I'm saving about $33 per month after taxes/fees!

Only caveat with these 'Save' plans, that I have read anyway, is that you need to be within 12 months of contract end and you have to ask for it (not advertised). There's also a 1 year contract. You can keep any upgrades you may be eligible for...I have not used ours yet. Waiting until she really wants a new phone. I was actually off contract when I did this...wish I would have found out about it sooner!

Not the dirttest cheepest price for cellphone service but good for Verizon.

For people that need Verizon towers, probably a good deal. Otherwise VZW is probably getting beat to a pulp with all the ~$45 ATT MVNOs out there.

I thought you could only get this plan for 50 dollars with EDGE. Is this right or were you able to use the phone you had?

I already have Verizon and I might switch to this. My discount just ran out and I would prefer not to pay $80+ a month.

I have unlimited data, but I use less than like 250mb a month of cellular data.

I am not on Edge. Using the same phone I have that I just got off contract with (HTC Rezound). Just be within 12 months of Contract end, I believe. I was actually off contract when I did it.

Exactly where I was coming from. Make the move!

Also check out companies like Page Plus-uses Verizon's networks and their plans are substantially cheaper (on on $29.95 month) but only 3G-at least for now. I switched from Verizon to Page Plus over a year ago and it's been great.

The problem with that is Verizon's 3G is awful. Not as bad as Sprint, but still awful.

With PagePlus, you're on awful Verizon 3G and the phone selection is absolutely atrocious.

Thanks OP, you saved me a bundle. Called this afternoon and switched plans with no problems. 🙂

Sweet! My contract expired in Oct. Never used texting before, cause I am a cheap bastard. But now, my bill is ~$30 less and I can text my fingers off. Yay!

Thank you!

Keep in mind that there are restrictions, like no 'hotspot' to share with other devices etc. I'm currently still under contract for another 2 months, after that I'm going to evaluate what the best deal is once the dust has settled in the cell plan wars.

How can there be no hotspot? I thought the FCC ruling stated if you're paying for a set amount of data it can be used however you like...

From the linked article:

We should point out that with the “SAVE” plan you cannot share data, use mobile hotspot (unless you pay extra for it), or receive the $10 EDGE discount.

I personally use the hotspot feature fairly frequently, I have tablets that don't have cell functionality -- using the hotspot I can use those anywhere as long as I have my phone with me. The "no hotspot" is a deal killer IMO.

If you guys use less than 250 mbs of data, why not do the $45 250mb plan then?

In my case, my wife uses about 650MB per month. She almost never uses WIFI and I wanted to have some margin there. In a pinch, she can always connect to my (work) phone's tethering if she gets tight on data or my son wants to watch some youtube during longer trips...so 1GB is good for us.

Is it one of the BYOP plans or do they have 2 year contract with free/subsidized phone plans?

This assumes you already have a phone. If you are like me and were already off contract, you can just switch to the plan and keep your current phone. Or, optionally, you can commit to a two year contract (instead of 1year for the standard Save Plan), keep the $50 price and also get a new phone. I'm just waiting for the 'right' phone to come out for my wife before we upgrade her to a new one.

Getting close to being competitive with t-mobile, but not there yet. Maybe if it was $25. or $40 with 4GB of data instead of 1GB.

FYI, if you select "single line plans" on the website you will get to a 1gb plan for $60. That was cheap enough to get me to switch from Virgin... 2 year contract with several free phones available. I got a Blackberry Q10
