Okay, so, I'm tired of my Voyager ATM. I've had it for a year and a half, and it was going out of style when I got it in Jan of last year. I wanted something like an Omnia, but couldn't afford it at the time.

So, if I bought a newer/older smartphone (well, like an Omnia for example), could I just activate it and go? We have the unlimited family plan that was offered then, with unlimited data, GPS, text, all that stuff. I'm not sure what phones need extra though (for instance, I know for a fact BlackBerrys do). I just need something different until we upgrade in January if I can get it cheap enough.

Just keep in mind the Omnia requires the $30 data plan. You could get one of the pre-Nov 2008 smartphones and put a PAYG data pack on it.

and also that the data included in your current plan is not the same data for a smart phone. they will charge you 30 more regardless of your "multimedia" data, a clarification they finally told me when i bitched about the family plan offering "unlimited data" but not if you have a smart phone.

To bump the thread, say I bought an Omnia from a guy- can I activate it online without paying more monthly? I thought I read somewhere you only really have to get the data if you do it in store...

Try it and see, but I doubt it. The system knows what the phone is.
