Verizon phone exchange issue

I upgraded from an LG enV to an iPhone 4 on July 5th, just in time to get unlimited data. My receipt says I can exchange it within 14 days.
So I had decided I would rather have a Droid Charge for 4G and Verizon won't let me exchange it. At first, they said it wouldn't be a problem and I could keep the unlimited data.
But when I got the iPhone, I wasn't due for my normal upgrade. Instead, it was under a special early upgrade offer which is no longer in effect. So they say the only way they can exchange it is to return it, then sell me the Charge, which they can't do now(except for at full retail) because I'm not eligible for an upgrade.

Anyone else run into a situation like this?
Any ideas?

I'm thinking my best bet now, if I want to keep unlimited data, is to keep the iPhone, then at some point, buy a 4G phone(maybe wait for the Bionic) at full retail and sell the iPhone on craigslist.
