Proof that they are specifically blocking tethering apps?

Updates have been known to mess with apps, tethering apps especially I remember having issues with after updates.

In the past on my friend's GNex VZW, all you need to do was download a tether toggle widget from the play store and it would allow you to tether natively without 3rd party apps.

It worked because the toggle widget would turn on tether without contacting VZW services to see if you have tethering enabled.

Try google for one of those.

You could always root and modify some files to get native tethering to work, or install custom rom.

specifically what are those widgets called. when i googled it, they said its the 4.4.2 update that permanently kills tethering, and i dont think gnex will ever have that update, but gnex is also a phone i wouldnt want to use at this point

i havent really paid attention to what decent phones are still rootable. right now im using my old razr maxx.

for those thinking about not installing the update, people are saying that if you dont accept it, varizon eventually forces it on you

If you're still using a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, you should rom'd anyway. Verizon never pushed the 4.3 update.

This works for my galaxy note 3: https://sites.google.com/site/wifitetherrouter/

But since I moved to 4.4.2, I am using a rom that has the tethering provisions bypass

so youre saying that WiFi Tether Router DOESNT work with 4.4.2?

so what can i root and put a custom rom on you guys? ive got razr, razr m, razr hd, galaxy3&4, razr mini, droid ultra and moto x. if some of these have already updated to 4.4.2 they can no longer be rooted right?

I am assume it works with 4.4. The change log says it was updated to support it. I decided to finally flash a custom ROM when the KitKat update for the note 3 dropped, with has a tether bypass included.

Read the updates from app developers!!!

What's New
WiFi mode is now supported on Verizon Samsung phones updated to Android 4.4 (KitKat). That includes Galaxy S5/S4/S3 and Note 4/3/2. We do not have a solution for other models so please stay with USB/Bluetooth mode for now.
There is also a way to remove the lock screen if you don't like it, please see descriptions!
A Bluetooth issue introduced in 2.16.2 is fixed in 2.16.4.

I thought Verizon couldn't block tethering apps due to the Block C regs? At least, for tiered data plans.

AFAIK:

looks like Verizon isn't (and can't ) block access to download the app (from google play store or wherever).

On the grandfathered unlimited plan, Verizon can offer you the "official" sanctioned method of tethering (by paying an extra $30/month). Verizon attempts to block all other tethering from their back-end servers

you are allowed to download foxfi. foxfi (and related apps) simply try to bypass Verizon's block (and you don't have to pay the extra $). Verizon is allowed to respond and try to block foxfi's method. cat and mouse game. you still have access to foxfi, but it might not be working (too bad for you then)

tiered plans: you can do whatever you want, verizon charges by the data bucket

tl;dr: Verizon can't block you from downloading/installing a wifi/tethering app, but they can try to block the wifi/tethering app from working

When I bought my Nexus 7 in October, I looked into what my options are for getting on the net with it. I called VZW and asked how I could tether it, with my plan. I am on an old plan with grandfathered unlimited data and am using a galaxy nexus. The rep told me that I could tether as much as I want and I quote, "We strongly suggest that you purchase the Verizon tethering plan, however, you may tether your device using whatever method you wish. We advise against using other methods because we cannot guarantee the service will work unless it is our product."

I thanked him for his time and purchased FoxFi immediately. Since then, I went from averaging 2-4GB/month to 20-30GB. foxfi worked flawlessly. I recently got sick of the sluggishness of my phone and decided to install a custom ROM (ShinyROM, 4.4.2) and root it. Now, every time I try to use FoxFi I get this message:

"Almost there... an extra step is needed on this phone. Please select "Go to Settings" below and turn on "Mobile Hotspot" within 30 seconds. From there you can also configure hotspot settings such as network name and password."

After going through those annoying steps every time I wanted to tether, I decided to see if I could just use the tether option without FoxFi... yep, it worked exactly the same, just without the FoxFi middleman.

I'm pretty sure I didn't have the tethering option in settings before (or at least couldn't turn it on). I'm not sure if a stock ROM would work differently, but now I use Power Toggle (needs root) to activate it and I have a toggle on my homescreen to turn on/off the native tethering app.
