Let the speculation commence: Verizon's just sent out invites for a mysterious press event on Tuesday, hosted by Verizon Wireless President Lowell McAdam at New York's Lincoln Center. That's right -- a huge event in New York after CES. Obviously the natural speculation is that this will be where the long-rumored CDMA iPhone makes its appearance, and it definitely feels that way -- but we suppose it could also be any number of other things, and it's definitely odd that Verizon's in charge and not Apple. Either way, we'll be there live to let you in on the scoop, so keep it locked right here.

I'm guessing this is the release of their LTE phones. If prior experience is any judge, if it was the iPhone, Apple would be sending out the invites. Verizon has LTE out, and it's released modems but no phones... I think event will be their LTE phones.

I believe that when the Verizon iPhone is released, Apple will host it.

They(Verizon) previewed multiple LTE phones at CES this week.

I'd say the best evidence yet that it's the iPhone is Gizmodo not having an invite.

Not to mention the CES reveal of LTE, no point in holding your own event on the other side of the country to say the same things.

Ok. The WSJ seems to have the inside scoop on things iPhone related. And you guys are right about CES and LTE.

Ok, we'll see, but I'm convinced. :)

Do people really care about the iPhone4 on Verizon? There are so many Android phones, a ton of them better hardware wise, and a new generation of phones incoming. Android vs iOS is a matter of preference now really.

I mean, really?

I LOVED my iPhone, but I hated AT&T, I tried to stick with AT&T but I just couldn't bare it. If this rumor is true and the iPhone's coming to Verizon. I've since gone to Verizon and got a OG Droid right now. While I like it a lot, but it's not the phone I want. So hell yes I care about this news, you bring up Android phones with better hardware. But a lot of them still are sluggish compared to iOS, and the app selection isn't even comparable. I'll buy a Verizon iPhone the day they're available where I don't have to camp out for 2 days to get one.

No high end phone is sluggish, usually. The only time there is a hint of slowdown is when you go to a page that has graphically intensive/data intensive and they need to load. Sluggishness a lie perpetrated by the Apple-mongers.

I guess according to a survey, 8-11M wants an iPhone on verizon. This is anecdotal, but 4-5 of my friends who are on verizon wanted an iPhone, but got an android device because the iPhone wasn't available.

The hottest smartphone released 4 yrs ago that flipped the market upside down is finally being available on another carrier. It's gonna make huge noise no matter how you look at it.

Android doesn't have GPU acceleration, so it has lag guranteed. The only other OS that doesn't have lag is WP7.

Want me to load a video of my Droid X in action? High end phones don't suffer the lag of the sub 1ghz phones. GPU acceleration would be nice for purposes of offloading from the CPU and better battery life, but Google themselves have said that drawing is rarely the problem.

Let me guess, you're running a custom rom so it's smooth, blah blah. Ive used 3 different droid X's from friends and they all have lag.

If you needed more proof, look at the supersized/4G Galaxy S refreshes. Last time, AT&T made their version (Captivate) look different from all the others because the basic Galaxy S is too iPhone-shaped.

This time, not only is it Verizon's i510 that has the weird shape, it's got crappier specs (4.3" vs 4.5" screen, no CPU speed bump) compared to the AT&T Infuse.

The only question, I think, is whether the Verizon iPhone will have LTE. I suspect not, since Apple would probably want to intro that itself, but who knows?

The only android device that has the least amount of lag is the galaxy s series. The new dual cores should be better.

I have an iPhone on AT&T. My company's support for Android is much (much!) less than the iPhone and so I wouldn't switch to Android pretty much no matter what - I'd take a Blackberry instead since Blackberry is supported as well as iPhone is. I don't have a personal problem with Android - in fact, I recommend it to others all the time - but I'm not giving up access to my Outlook-synchronized calendar (and, yes, I know, Android can do this, but my company doesn't supporta/allow doing it with Android in a method that's anywhere near as nice as the iPhone/Blackberry solution).

That said, I really dislike AT&T service, so I am highly interested in whatever Verizon is going to announce. If it's priced well, there's a significant chance that I'll move as soon as they announce.

really? Aren't you the guy that said that no on REALLY wants Android, and that after the Verizon iPhone, Android will dwindle?

While I do think there are Verizon users waiting for the iPhone, more than that, I think there are a lot of iPhone users on AT&T just for that. we will see a bigger shift in carrier share than in OS share.

John Gruber on Verizon announcing rather than Apple:

(Gruber is one of the sources Apple leaks stuff to...)

Why Next Week’s Event Is Hosted by Verizon, Not Apple

Friday, 7 January 2011

So why is next Tuesday’s announcement of the Verizon iPhone a Verizon-hosted event in New York and not an Apple-hosted event in Cupertino? Here’s my theory. Apple is fully aware that when they say “We’re having an event next week” that people expect big news and a new product. If they were hosting this event, speculation would be rampant that it would involve a new iPad and maybe an iPhone 5, in addition to the expected Verizon deal. There is no new Apple product, though. We nerds know that a CDMA iPhone 4 is a different device than the GSM iPhone 4, but from a consumer perspective, it’s the same phone but just works on a different carrier. What would Apple show? What would there be to demo?
This is the sort of thing where Apple needs to play it cool, and act like this is just another carrier. Good news, but not big news. The bottom line from Apple is going to be something like, “We’re delighted to add Verizon as an iPhone carrier”. That’s it.
And if Verizon wants to do some on-stage bragging about the ways that their network is better than AT&T’s, Apple can’t really be a part of that. Apple is not leaving AT&T for Verizon. They’re adding Verizon as a peer to AT&T. Verizon can disparage AT&T at a Verizon event. Apple couldn’t let them do that at an Apple event.
So, I’ll be surprised if Jobs is there. I think it’ll be Phil Schiller or Greg Joswiak (or, who knows, maybe even Tim Cook?). But John Paczkowski reports that Jobs will appear:
While the appearance isn’t 100 percent assured, sources in a position to know tell me that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, Jobs will likely join McAdam onstage in New York when he announces the addition of the iPhone to its handset lineup.
We’ll see.

(I'll be looking for a used iP4 with ATT bands after the Verizon phone comes out)

Heh, well, there's your problem right there, of course android is going to feel sluggish with the original Droid. These new android phones that are coming out are DUAL CORE and will be snappier than the iphone 4.

Have you used the IP4 on a regular basis ??
There is no lag on the IP4.
Even the 3GS has no lag.
Its more about the OS than anything.

That still remains to be seen. My prediction is that the Tegra2 will be as snappy as an iPhone4. I'll wait and see though.

there doesnt appear to be much lag because 3g is very slow. once you have lte speeds there will be a huge performance difference between ip4 and the dual core android phones
