Got the marketing insert in my FIOS bill today. They say up to 800Mbps speeds and WiFi Range of 325 feet. Is it worth the $200 and does it do what it says it will do? It is 802.11AC. Anyone have it or know the inside story? Verizon chat guys just cut and paste information and do not answer my questions.

The quoted numbers are "useless", this type of numbers are quoted for any Wireless Router that claims AC800 capacity and goes $40 and above. They are related to the Chipset rating and has very little to do with real Life performance.

$37 Example - http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-App-Ena...XMWTD53A776083

That said the Wireless part of this Router would probably do better than the current ActionTech single band.

It is a AC1750 class router, modified for Verizon service.
Side note: As per usual Verizon practice, they have disabled the USB ports.

Additional details
The gateway can support both the Z-Wave and Zigbee wireless protocols that are used in home automation devices such as smart thermostats and light bulbs, according to the document. Greenwave filed a separate application for a Zigbee module that is designed for use with the FiOS Quantum Gateway. Quantum is the brand that Verizon uses to market FiOS Internet tiers that range in speeds from 75 Mbps to 500 Mbps. In January, Verizon confirmed that it had stopped offering FiOS subscribers its Verizon Home Monitoring and Control service, which was based on the Z-Wave protocol. "We are revisiting the service to more accurately reflect our vision for the connected home," a Verizon spokesman said in January.

Does anyone have this router on Verizon FIOS? If so, is it faster than the crummy ActionTec router? With the ActionTec I routinely get only about 25 Mbps up and down when I am paying for much more. Of course when I wire direct to a laptop I get more like 80 Mbps. Of course they tell you those speeds aren't guaranteed for wireless. To which I say BS because my Cox service with latest Surfboard MODEM and ASUS RT-N66U flies in comparison.

Which actiontec? G or n(advance router)?
The n isn't bad for the type of router it is. However you should mention the speed of devices you are using and the distances involved.

Yeah, nope, you are wrong.

Take a step back, not all wireless is the same. You RT-N66u (it an N900 class router) to a client that can support it at full speed is roughly 3x faster than the ActionTec 802.11n router (an N150 class router), compared to the older 802.11g ActionTec routers it is roughly 6x faster (wireless wise).

The oldest 802.11g ActionTec is at best going to support only 20Mbps or so even on a good connection. The 802.11n ones around 50-80Mbps and the N300 ones around 100-160Mbps.

Let me put it this way.

Unless there is something important in the New FIOS Wireless Router in as a Router per-se.....

For Better Wireless One Would do better by getting something like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833320174

Connect it as an AP, then use the old ActionTech Wireless for low end Wireless connection and the Asus for High Level connection.

One gets in Total more Wireless bandwidth and saves few $$ in the process.

Using Wireless Routers (or Modem/Wireless Router) as a Switch with an Access Point - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

Thanks to all of you wonderful helpers. I currently pay Verizon for 75/75 download/upload but get 85/85. Modem/Router is ActionTec WI424WR Rev I connected via Coax Cable to the Internet. What I am curious about is it worth it for me to get another router to boost these speeds acting as an Acess Point? I am anxious to see if I can boost the WiFI speeds? I am an newbie to this and would need a check off list to pull this off.

If you are using Wireless and performance of the Wireless computer is much lower than the number above, then you can use a better Wireless device.

Otherwise, given your numbers for wire connection their is Nothing to Boost.

The WI424WR Rev I is a N300 router.
If you have devices that are faster then yes you might see speed improvements.
I have the same router on a 50/50 plan and use another router for wireless duty.

IMO, despite its age and ratings its not a bad router. I have had this thing for ages and I never had to reboot it or deal with any issues. It was extremely reliable.
Unless you have range issues or a bunch AC devices hungry for some 5ghz love it might be worth it to wait for Verizon to start offering deals on their new AC1750 router.
