verizon dsl connectivity issues

verizon says my dsl line is up and running, but my computer is unable to connect to the internet. I use WEP and mac filtering. I've had this problem before. Currently I'm using my brother's Comcast cable wifi. I am unable to get into my linksys router set up screen presently, until my brother comes home so he can go into his linksys router setup to turn off his broadcast. So right now, I am left to contemplate to either wait until he comes home so I can turn off my dsl WEP ( and leave on mac filtering), or to call verizon tomorrow morning to set up an appointment where they can send a live rep to my home. I am tired of troubleshooting on the phone with them.

Pardon? If you mean turn off the modem and router for 15 seconds and then turn on again, then yes. I haven't tried pressing that reset button with the pen tip at the back of the modem yet. I have to wait for my brother to come home to turn off his cable linksys router from broadcasting so I can get a clean signal from the dsl router.

Something must be wrong with me.

Some how the terms Verizon DSL, MAC filtering, WEP, logging to Router, do not seem to fit together to a Picture of how the Network works and what is wrong with it?

But I have the feeling that this is the fate of people that are using Wireless without the capacity to configure the system with a wired connection.

It the problem your dsl service or your wireless connection to the router?? If its the latter it doesn't sound like Verizons issue.

True. I really have to wait until my brother comes home so he can disable his cable router from broadcasting so I can get a clean signal to my dsl router. I only had him share his wifi so I can go online using his bandwidth.

Why don't you just name both networks differently and have them use different channels? Then you can configure both on your laptop and logon to whichever you prefer.

Different channels? explain please. I can't seem to connect to my dsl successfully while the cable is broadcasting. Even if I take out the cable router from the preferred networks box, I still access the cable router setup screen instead of the dsl router setup screen when i type in the ip addy in the addy bar.

Ahh. It sounds like they might be configured for the same IP address then, although I am at a loss as to why you can't associate your wireless client NIC with a different AP, and thus access that device's setup screens, unless they are both set to the same SSID.

I recently installed (finally sucessfully, though still not "perfect") a wireless setup here, and I actually have two wireless routers set up, on the same "channel", one 'b', and one 'g', and I can use my LinkSys USB2.0 'g' NIC to connect to either of them, to access their setup menus. However, they are using different SSIDs.

I run W2K SP2 as an OS, not XP, so I don't think that it's possible to actually select a different wireless router/AP to associate with, without using the additional bundled LinkSys wireless utility program. (Which creates different profiles for the NIC, for each Wireless LAN that is accessable.)

Assuming that the problem isn't that both wireless LANs are using the same SSID, what abou trying to obtain a utility for your NIC to associate with the "other" wireless router/AP, and go from there?

PS. I was actually surprised, it appears that having two APs in close vicinity, even on the same channel, doesn't interfere. Perhaps that would be different, if both were in heavy use at once, I don't know.

OKay guys, I'm writing from my pc and while on the verizon dsl network, connected with the wireless usb adapter. I am connected with my linksys router now, and I did it wirelessly. What happened is that I had to reset my router, go into run-->cmd-->ipconfig/all......get my new ip address from the reset router, go into linksys setup page by typing the new router ip in IE, type in the new ip address, enable ppoe, and then type in my username and password. I of course am leaving ssid broadcast on, and disabling mac filtering and wep to make connections easier from now on.

I don't know if I would leave those security features disabled permanently, I got a bit of a scare here once I realized that there were two other WLANs in nearby vicinity when I was setting up my rig. Once you get everything talking to one another, I would at least try minimally enabling WEP, so that people don't, even accidentally, associate with your WLAN.
