I'm working with a small sized company, and they need a solid backup plan.

A full backup only takes about 50gigs, so obviously they don't have too much data.

Right now, they are backing up everything on a daily basis:
5:00PM: Mail
8:00PM: SQL
8:30PM: Keane
9:30PM: Full Backup (no Keane)

Obviously, this isn't ideal. What is the best way to create a backup schedule? I'm not really sure where to start.

really depends on whether you want data to be taken off site. At my place I do a full backup on Sunday night that gets moved off site. A full backup on Monday night and incrimental backups the rest of the week. This seems to give us the greatest data efficiency and the ability to restore data from any night of the week.

First off, what kind of hardware/media are they using? DLT, LTO, DAT?

Without knowing how much data the media can hold it's hard to recommend a good backup strategy.

Is AIT-3 a media format? I think that's what it is.

Yes it is...holds around 100GB native so that should be just fine. Mikeyes has a good backup strategy in his post.

The only thing is with incrementals the backups are usually faster but require more media. If you go with a differential you use less media but backups take a little longer. Either way, it's a good idea to do at least one weekly full backup and move it off-site like he mentions.

There are a lot of options for backup software out there. Arc Server, Backup Exec, etc. Any of them will do what you need them to do. I've used both but prefer Backup Exec. Backup Exec is rather expensive though when you start adding in the various agents like the Exchange Agent, SQL Agent and so on.

They are already using BackupExec, they're doing fullbackups every day, along with incremental backups also. I'm just trying to figure out "when to backup what" Maybe ill do incrementals every day, then a full backup at the end of the week.
