Hey. My dads server at work used to backup onto tapes but we have changed over to external HDD's. Can someone please help my change over the settings in VERITAS Backup Exec 8.5 so that it backs up onto the external HDD. I have tryed everything and just dont know how to get the program to do it. I dont exactly understand all this drive pools and stuff

We only have 2 External HDD's and are going to be swapping them each day.

Thanks

Unfortunately, I dont have the app installed on the machine I am using right now, but I can prob help you out... You are going to need to set-up and save a new back-up... Be sure the destination drive is all set and visible in my computer... open back up exec and choose new back-up... select the files and folders you are going to need to back-up... You should see a place to browse to your desired destination at the bottom of the window, so browse to the place on the external drive you would like to save this new back-up... choose to save this new back-up... let the back-up rip!

Hope this helps....

The feature you want is in BEX 10, which you can download from www.backupexec.com. It will be a trial version good for 60 days until you buy a license. As far as I know, you cannot backup to disk using version 8.5, that feature was added in version 9 or 9.1.

I could be wrong though, the key factor is how BEX defines removable hard drives: as a hard drive or as removable storage, and I'm not sure on that for version 8.5.

Thanks for the replies

I downloaded version 10 and still had the same problems as I did withe 8.5. It asks for media sets and disk pools and stuff I cannot get my HDD added to these as I am not sure how to use this program.

Thanks for the reply but VERITAS does not appear to be as simple as this. You cant just select a destination when creating a backup job

Any more help would be greatly appreciated otherwise my dad will have to get his IT Manager to do it, which he charges $130AU an hour!!!!

I am on my laptop again (the one without b-u exec)... granted i have an older version of backup exec, but yeah, you can, or at leaast you were able to select destination drives for your back-ups... i am not sure if i ever even tried to save my b-u to an external drive, though... i save to a dedicated b-u internal drive then burn them off to dvd-rw's. whatever. sorry i couldn't help you out. good luck.
