I went to OM on 1/31 and they had like 4 of the 48x12x48x Verbatims there, and the picture on the box looks like a liteon, but when I checked out the contents, everyone of them was a 48x16x48x drive. But as luck would have it, as I was digging, I found a 52x24x52x Verbatim that was marked 39.99! Right now, there's a $30 rebate for that drive, so 9.99 after rebate +tax is pretty good! I just wonder what it might actually be. One thing I do like is that the tray is gear driven instead of belt and there's no markings on the face except for the speed. the box shows Verbatim on the tray, but luckily it's not really like that. Thanks for the help guys!

Firmware revision. The only maker of 52x24x52x CDRW drives known is Liteon. I might be wrong on this.

Umm. The Lite-On's have the characteristic raised circle at the top of the drive, right underneath the silver label. I bought one Cendyne and one Verbatim and they're both like that. There was a previous thread somewhere about how to tell by looking at the serial number of the box but I can't remember it off the top of my head. Maybe try a search? :) Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, just wanted to make sure. I figured it was a LiteOn from what the guys said over in the Hot Deals forum about another 52x drive, but wanted to make sure.

btw, this drive is very nice. I had a Plextor 16x10x40x before and even though the Plextor seems to have a little more of a quality feel, the Liteon is quite for the speed and very quick.
