found out how u can update firmware for the AOpen verbatim drives...
when you try to flash the new firmware with the program available from the aopen site...the flasher says that it cant update for a different code type...
however if u try to flash the firmware for the 40x12x48 drive it actually updates it...
so what u can do is...
download both firmware updates for cdw4850 and for 4048, the *.exe files are actually self-extracting zip files...u can extract them to any directory by right clicking them...
so to update....extract both to the same folder...
there will be two flash programs and two .bin files (version 107 for the 4048 and 1.04 for the 4850)
so..start up any of the two flash programs....and select ur drive in the top pull down menu...and for the firmware choose the bin file for the 4048 drive version 1.07
clik next...
DO NOT CLICK START....
and now....go back to the directory where the two bin files are...and rename the 107 version file to anything else and the 104 version bin file for the 4850 drive to what the 107 version file was named before...
the program should now flash the (renamed) 104 version file for the 4850 drive without giving the error message for the different type code....
sorry for being vague and not providing specific file names...im feeling lazy after playing around with this all day yesterday...but i hope this helps and eliminates those coasters for some....

Bravo sashko!

I just tried this and it works with the following correction. You have to use the flash utility from the 4048 download or it doesn't work. The one that's named RFlash(AO).exe I'm returning this drive anyway 'cause of the deal onthe Cendyne/LiteOn, but I just had to try it. Oh well, I hopefully helped the next person that buys it.

I'm going to repost this in a couple other of forums where we have been discussing this if you haven't done so already. I'll link here so you get credit! ;)

I tried to flash the firmware, but I got the message "Not Found ASPI Manager".
What is it?

I do have both firmware (4850, 4048) in the same folder. Need help.

Thanks

You may wrongly try to flash it and the OS is not seeing the drive.
-Shut down your computer (power off, restart will not do). Power it on and go to bios ('DEL' Key or some computer 'F2'....etc)
-go to the drive screen (where IDE1 master, slave, IDE2 master, slave..... floppy drive....)
-detect all drives ('F3' key for some board)
-make sure you see the BIOS get your CDRW (or said CDROM, ATA said 4) on most likely the IDE2 master (i think you have only one cdrw, right? no dvd or cdrom drive)

-save bios and exit (or exit with save)

start windows as usual,

follow the instruction carefully as sashko said:
1. extract all 2 exe into a common folder (right click and use winzip to extract)
2. run RFlash(AO).exe
3. make sure no cd disc in drive
4. select the drive as 48X....
5. select the bios as 40X....
6. use windows explorer, in your common folder, rename the 40X bin into some other name, like add 'X' infront for easy to see the orginal name
7. rename the 48X bin bin file to what 40X use to be.
8. Go back to RFlash(AO) screen and 'next'/ 'start'
9. finished in close.
10. Restart computer if needed.
11. check in control panel, cdrw property has verison 1.04. Done.

yes, note the cdrw deal is dead as it is last week,
but some additional info about the BIOS update.

I start getting coasters after a perfect start. i then remove the nero express that come with the drive, install a nero 5.5, download the update from nero.com, and can only burn it as 40X ?? with win98se. Then its where the coaster start. Uninstall all and go back to the OEM nero express. still coaster.... same problem as lead-out or mostly the close to last few MB of disc. May be it have problem writing over 650MB as i am writing amost 700 if not over a bit.)
after update bios to 1.04.

Try the same and now by the end of writing, message like "Justlink prevent a buffer underrun".. and the cd go no problem at 48X. hope it last.....

BTW, edit for a review link

cdrinfo review

and it said "The three jumpers on the right are used to set the drive's ATA working mode setting. The drive is set to "DMA mode" by default; and you can set your drive to "UDMA" mode by removing the jumper. "
don't have the drive with me now but may see it when i back home...

Thank you.
Windows 2000 appears to be the problem; after I booted to Windows 98, no trouble at all.
Now, waiting for the rebate...

Hmm, I flashed it under Win2K just fine. Maybe your ASPI layer is not up to date? Also I recall applying a registry patch so CDex would work correctly. Something about Adaptec not correctly making the registry entry upon install.

My bad. I use Instant CD/DVD, it uses its own control layer(IW something..., I installed that a while back, totally forgot about that.) Have not use Adaptec about a year, after their EasyCD 5 totally killed Windows 2000 -- blue screen of death -- they fixed a month later, I just don't want to bother with it.
Thank you

First post here.

I also bought this but when I opened the box the drive doesn't have Verbatim logo on it as shown on the box.
Also NERO doesn't see the CD-RW and so I am not able to burn even if I have Nero version 5.8.xx which should
support Verbatim drives.

I am all confused now. Don't know what to do?
any help would be appreciated?

and yes it does show up as 48X12X50 instead of 48X12X48.

Thx

Well, if you look at the box, the drive model is actually VBT481248A and Nero doesn't specifically list this drive as being supported. And this drive is actually an Aopen, mine didn't have the Verbatim logo on it either. Some things to try:

Can you update Nero? They have a patch up to 5.5.9.17
Update the firmware for sure. Here is a thread, about half way down, I explain how to flash it so it will be recognized as an Aopen CRW4850

If you're not comfortable with that procedure, Cendyne has an updated firmware for this drive, they also box the Aopen drive. It will still be a "no name" drive though.

After I flashed it with the Aopen firmware, it was recognized in EZCD Creator 5 Platinum, didn't have Nero then...

Since this is a relatively newer drive, I would get the latest burning software upgrade. Good luck!

nebula, according to Rac420 on ***wallet, your drive is a Lite-On.

(All the verbatim-Lite-on's SS# started with VBT).

RAC420- I've been involved in posts with him on CDFreaks, is he causing trouble! :) He should know this drive is an Aopen, but not always. Maybe they once were...

I've written this many times, look at the PN on the drive, it's almost identical to the PNs that Aopen lists on their site for the CRW4850. Trust me on this, I used this procedure that I recommeded to flash it to an Aopen and that's what it is now. But I brought it back and got a Cendyen which is a LiteOn.

Plus, LiteOn doesn't even make a 48x12x50
