Ventured into my first asian grocery store today

So...are they all that unsanitary and carry the scent of a pet store?

*update* Finally found one near downtown that smelled like...pine-sol 😱
i couldn't believe it. And no bludgeoned raw fish laying in bloody cardboard boxes on the floor as well.

And no, i am not narrow minded. That last location smelt like the underside of a pier.

find yourself a better asian market then? lol

You probably went to a small corner one. Many of the larger asian stores are almost like the big American grocery chains. There's still going to be that smell, although not as bad, due to all the spices, herbs, and sauces they carry.

As someone who lives in an asian community and gone to tons of asian supermarkets, I have to say that they all stink bad and are really dirty. The only people who will deny that (including in this thread) are asian people

All the ones I've been to? Yes. All stores? No.

It is sad that they tend to stink and tend to be filthy. It really doesn't give your culture a good name. But where else am I to go to get my lime leaves and large bagfuls of basmati rice for almost no money at all?

My sentiments exactly

OP: I've been to dozens of Asian grocery stores in my life time, and I have seen a couple clean ones (Well, they weren't clean, but certainly were passable...)

So, don't stereotype! :|

You mean I can't find it at Walmart?????? :Q

I've been meaning to go to one - I can't find the ingredients for Miso soup or sushi at Von's 🙂 Also need to pick up some Tahini, but I think that is more Middle-East than Far East.

The OP is narrow-minded. It's just different from what you're accustomed to smelling. The same people that frequent that store could say the same thing about the smell in your house.

Cleanliness is another thing though, however, it has nothing to do with race.

Yes. I ventured into an asian grocery store once too. Won't make that mistake again...god that place smelled like the harbor at low tide.

the smell I notice is usually from the fish section. I've seen a fish cut in half and put on display and it's heart was still beating.

I'm asian. Though honestly I'm culturally white and yes they smell funky. I wouldn't neccessarily say they smell like crap where I go. In fact the larger one around here the Hong Kong Supermarket is pretty damn clean. Like wal-mart pretty much.

 while I have been to some dirty ones they are definetely not all dirty. There are quite a few in Orange County that are just as clean as any major grocery store.

and I'm not asian btw

Did you go to 99 Ranch? That store is pretty much clean and free of odor until you get to meat sections. Then it just smells like meat.
