Ventrilo lag problems

So my Q4 clan just got a ventrilo server, and I find it helps tremendiously in CTF games. I'm having this weird problem though I was hoping I could get some help on.

I have this network monitor thing on within Q4 and I find if I have it configured for voice activation, the moment I start talking I get these ridiculous lag spikes and I can't move for about 3 seconds, and after that if I continue talking it gets better but it still is a little laggy. Now if I have it set to the push to talk thing, then I rarely get any lag.

Is this a problem with vent itself? Is there something I can tweak from the settings that might help? I find it weird that push-to-talk doesn't lag me down(AS MUCH) but voice activation does (only if i say anything ofcourse.)

maybe a driver issue? with the comp in your sig it shouldnt be a problem. Could be an internet bandwidth issue....?

Thanks for responding, I don't think it's a driver issue since I updated my drivers, and some of my clanmates are using the same ones. I think it might be server related, I ping about a hundred to the server and I know it's set to the highest quality(also highest bandwidth), using the GSM codec.
What codec is reccomended for best bandwidth but not sacrifising quality? And is it possible to change it client side or is it from the server only?

Weird thing is, sometimes it happens, somtimes it doesn't, though now it's happening the majority of the time. But no one else is experiencing it and it's pissing me off, communicating doesn't help when it gets you frozen for four seconds or so =/
