Believe me, I know all about women like that. I still haven't found my son's mother, and she kidnapped him almost 7 years ago now 🙁 Fortunately, this one's not remotely like that monster.

Obviously the person before this did a switch-a-roo and did the swap. The service rep taking it back did not check the serial# for this scam. Obviously its not your fault, but in their eyes it is. I guess the next time you buy anything openbox (if you do ever go down that road) is to open it after u purchase it and check the serials. It's sad that it had to come to this. I hope your g/f and your relationship are alright..
 
I don't know why no one has said this, but your GF is a wuss. If it was my girlfriend, i'd expect her to do everything here by herself and be able to take care of herself. I expect her to be able to handle a stupid Fry's employee without my intervention, unless it actually got physical. To break down and cry about it is just lame.

My vote, go raise hell at fry's and get a new gf.

You're right, but this one was a repack, and the label is *mostly* missing (the barcode is there). There's no serial on the receipt either, but the drive looks new except that the manufacture date shows October 2003. I didn't think much of that fact, though, given that it was a repack and the box was beat up.

So weird. I have NEVER had a problem returning a product to Fry's, defective or not. And I've returned hundreds.

And what's up with all the Maxtor hate lately? Maxtors are great drives. DOA happens. You should have known when you saw it was discounted with open box sticker. Hell, I picked up a WD drive a few months that was DOA with bad sectors right out of the box and had to return it to OM... that wasn't much fun...

His wife or gf up and took off with his son, what's so hard to figure out? And yes, that is kidnapping if the courts ordered visitation rights and whatnot.

I say call the cops and make a complaint. Unless they have a habit of writing down the serial number when they sell it, I dont see how they can enforce any policy. If you bought it with a credit card, call your credit card company and file a fraud claim against them.
 
Even if your girlfriend intentionally brought back a different drive (which clearly she didn't) there is no excuse for a store employee to be screaming at a customer. I'd be most upset about that.

Yeah, I was awarded custody and she *bolted*, so far never to be seen again. Generally sucks, but reality is that when a *parent* kidnaps the kid, especially if it's a woman, they don't put that much effort into it. And of course, it was well before the age of Amber Alerts.
