I'm not a comic book guy either, but from my understanding that black suit is some sort of alien symbiotic organism thing that sorta corrupts the user - or something like that. I believe Venom is actually the name that is applied to a particular individual (don't know his name) that wears the black suit.

Or I could be totally wrong, like I said I am not a comic book know-it-all, just trying to remember what my friends told me way back in the day.

Eddie Brock becomes Venom....Eddie Brock doesn't like Peter Parker, thus they become enemies. At first the symboit suit benefited Parker and it gradually turned him towards evil so he tried to lose the suit, but it wouldn't let him so he had to "beat the suit".

Eddie then discovered the suit and led Brock to Spidermans true identity.
