I installed the xp-90 with artic silver 5 and used the recommended fan:

However, this fan goes on and off randomly. When it does spin, Everest only shows it spinning at around 200rpm.

I couldn't really overclock worth anything with a fan that sits there like an idiot. This normal or do I have a gimp?

I ended up putting the stock Thermalright fan back on the xp-90.

maybe try and disable Cool and Quiet, if you have not already done so ...

also if you have the neo2 platinum mobo, dont use core cell. I think it adjusts the fan speed as well. i may be wrong.

Your not using the Motherboard header to power those fans are you? THe larger fans need to be powered by a PSU lead... Otherwise youcan easily overload the motherboard power connector and cause the fan tospin slow and/or stop.

Yeah I try not ever use the fan headers on the mobo.

why not use the fan headers , i am and it is fine and i have a KEN neo2 plat, if the fans require direct power from the PSU then they get supplied with a molex connector on the fans

Ok, maybe I need to give a little more info.

1. DFI nf4 ultra D motherboard.
2. Cool N Quiet is disabled.
3. I'm using the small 3 pin connection on the motherboard labeled for the cpu fan. The thermaltake fan spins at around 1000-1400 rpm, though jab-tech's website (where I got it from) says it goes up to 2500rpm.
4. The Panaflo fan just spins up and down randomly. And when it spins, everest only shows an rpm of 200rpm (Max).

The fan doesn't have a molex connection and I don't have a converter, so its going through the motherboard. I'll have more time to mess with it tonight. It was getting really late last night

Just did a few email exchanges with the Jab-tech folks (I got it there). Guy says the Panaflo M1A has no sensor for the rpm readings, so that would be why the Everest readings are off. He also says it may explain why the DFI board shuts it off occassionally, because of no sensor. If true, is there a way to override something like this?

This fan has to be semi-popular with AT folks, anyone have this problem with the DFI NF4?

make sure the fan is connected to someting called "cpu fan" not "chassis fan" i did this when i built my rig, and was having similar problems.

I made sure of that before and after I put it together. Unless DFI labeled the two 3pin connectors wrong on my motherboard.

the 92mm medium speed does not support rpm monitoring..

Thats good. As it turns out, jab-tech is sending me an adapter to connect it directly to the PSU. He really doubts the fan is bad, and believes a direct connection to the PSU would fix it. Glad someone else feels the same!

Cool, I'll definitely check that as well. What should the ideal setting be?

the bios has "cpu thermal throttling" enable as default which makes the cpu fan stop when cpu temp < 25c, spin @ 50% when temp > 25c but < 50c, and spin @ 100% when temp > 50c. i guess since your fan doesnt have a sensor, the thermal control on the board doesnt know what to do.

It's pretty easy to kill the fan throttling on the DFI Ultra-D, in the BIOS' PC Health section leave "Fan fully OFF" set to <25 and set "Fan fully ON" to >25.

Of course, the direct to PSU solution is perfectly fine for a non-sensing fan too

EDIT: These functions work regardless of whether the fan supports RPM monitoring or not. I have a non-sensing 120mm exhaust fan hooked up to the FAN2 header and controlled by PWM temp and the speed throttling works fine.

It was 4am in the morning and I'm just watching this fan spin on and off randomly. I didn't know if it was broken or I was just seeing things. I hope the cpu didn't get damaged due to occassional lack of active cooling. I touched the xp-90, and it was just slightly warm.

On the DFI board, it has an option where it shuts off the fan if the CPU temp goes below a certain point, and it also won't speed the fan all teh way up until the CPU temp goes above a certain point. Look around for those options in the bios and lower both as far as they will go (25 on by board).
