Venice OCing thread!

Thought some of you might be interested in knowing I'm at 2.65 (241x11) GHz right now at 1.5 volts... running Prime 95 right now and not getting errors. The differences is the BIOS is set to 236x11 and I'm doing the additional overclocking with Core Center.

Thought I'd chip in:

LBBLE 0516CPBW - 3000+ 2430 (270x9) MHz on 1.58V, rock-solid. Had to drop memory to 2T to get there. I'm almost positive that my PSU is holding me back--my CPU can boot into Windows as high as 2.6, but as soon as I hit prime95 it fails almost immediately. I've got a Zalman CNPS-7000AlCu, so temps aren't an issue--I'm at 50 degrees load, 35 idle. I'm going to let it burn in at this for about a week, and then revisit it in the summer with a new PSU. But I've got to say I'm thrilled so far--I went from a 2.4c (overclocked to 2.8) to this monster, and there's such a huge difference it's outstanding. Half-Life 2 plays like a DREAM.

explain please. My budget for a processor is 200 MAX. so 3500 is not an option, im debating between the 3000 and 3200 venice cores and have heard arguments both ways

I'd only get the 3000+ if you were pairing it with a DFI NF4 motherboard. Anything else I wouldn't trust to consistently reach 300HTT (which is what you'll need for 2.7ghz on that 3000+).

Of course, grabbing a cheaper s939 NF3 board with a 3200+ would most likely balance out the pricing of the first option.

and not all CBBID winnies suck. I run 2620 1.6v prime stable. Stock cooling.
 
This thread has been useful. I was debating whether to go to the 3000 or 3200+, the 3200+ didn't seem worth it but I wasn't sure but this thread basically confirms my view. I'm gonna be getting the DFI Ultra-D so really there seems no point to me to get the 3200+ given that my board would very likely be able to handle 300fsb and probably 311fsb as well it seems unlikely the multiplier will hold me back and given I'm unlikely to ever have RAM that'll be able to run at 250-280 with good timings the idea of running RAM sync isn't worth it either.
 
I'm planning on getting a DFI UT Ultra-D for my venice. Is the OCZ Gold VX memory worth it? I probably could run sync up to 250 or so, but w/ the DFI hitting 300+ would I be better to just get cheaper ram and plan to run a divider? I was aiming at 250-260 w/ the 3500+. I have been planing on buying a rig alot like brentpresley's and using my AthlonXP for a HTPC. The more money I can save on my A64 box, the quicker I can finish my HTPC. What do you guys think?

Hey bro, if you can spare the cash, go w/ the OCZ. It's running FANTASTIC right now at 250 1.5-2-2-5 (backed down a bit for my day-to-day stuff). I was using a 9/10 memory divider with the Corsair 3200LL that was in the system before the OCZ came and I can tell a significant difference in 3D aps and rendering (and just about anything else that soaks up memory bandwidth).

Just my 0.02.
 
Thanks for the reply! Are you running the PC3200 VX or the PC4000 VX? I would love to get 2.8 for my EDL (every day life) stuff. Would love it even more if I could do that on a 3200+, but to be safe I'll prob get the 3500+. Thanks to my sweet, wonderful wife, I don't get to upgrade as often as I like, so this needs to last a little while.

Temps are solid @ 34C idle

Drop your memory timings. Plummet them. Get as low as you possibly can. I was stuck (literally stuck) at 250 HTT until I dropped my memory to 2T. It didn't matter WHAT my divider was at, or what the rest of my timings were--as soon as I put it to command 2T, I was able to hit 270. So put everything to the bottom and give it a go that way. Also, have you tried nudging the Vcore up a bit more? That helped me solidify my current overclock.

To answer other questions--I bought the chip from Monarch. My PSU is an Antec TruePower 480W. It's only got 22A on the 12V rail, and it's not a native 24-pin PSU, so I knew that my OC was gonna be limited. I've never seen my voltages waver in SmartGuardian, but that doesn't really mean much. My chip may just top out at 2.4GHz, and if that's the case, I can accept that--4000+ speeds for 150 isn't a bad deal in my book. But I would love to hit 2.5 or 2.6 on this chip, so I'll keep giving it a whirl. I haven't tinkered much with this new 4.14 BIOS; maybe that will get me above my current limit. We'll see.

Now I am running 295x9 = 2655

1.57 in CoreCenter and CPU-Z

It boots right into Windows @ 300x9 = 2700mhz but I don't think the extra Vcore is worth the 50 mhz..

I had the same problem with my chip. I was able to run my Corsair VS memory at 1:1 at its rated timings (2.4-3-3-8 1T) up to about 220. And oddly enough, putting in a divider and running even just a little over 200 would give problems if I stayed at 1T. Dividers didn't matter--if the HTT went up significantly it wanted 2T no matter the divider. However, if I dropped to 2T I too could easily go over 270. I'm running 10x250 right now with a 2T rate and it's stable. I think I have a little more headroom, but probably less than 100Mhz.

This setup could probably run at 300x9=2700MHz stable but I do not wish to push it that far. I tested both reasonable memory dividers and received similar results. I may run the machine at the (5/6) divider @2403MHz for daily use since it may pose less stress for the system. I wonder if a new (better?) power supply would have an affect on these readings and overclocking efficiency.

At the moment, I am running SETI for speed comparisons I am familiar with.

733MHz P3 Intel can run SETI in 12 hours
1.7GHz P4 Intel can run SETI in 3 hours
1.8GHz AMD64 3000+ Venice can run SETI in 4 hours
2.0GHz AMD64 3000+ Venice can run SETI in 3 hours
2.4GHz AMD64 3000+ Venice can run SETI in 2 hours 40 minutes
2.6GHz AMD64 3000+ Venice can run SETI in 2 hours 20 minutes

Please let me know if I missed anything.

Almost forgot to mention . . . Thank you very much, Zebo, for your overclocking procedure. It was very helpful.
 
CMC--Yeah, I don't know what it is about the Venice chips, but their memory controller is picky as all hell... once you go past a certain HTT, it just doesn't want to deal with 1T anymore. Not really sure why.

bjc--Glad to hear it! 🙂 As for Vcore, as long as you're under 1.6V, you'll be fine. I'd even say 1.65V is still safe, but that's as high as I'm willing to entertain. I'm not the most experienced guy on the board, though, so hopefully Duvie and Zebo will chime in with their advice. But it's really heartening to see everyone getting up to 2.6 and 2.7 now--it makes me think I've definitely got more headroom, if I tweak a little more.

I would suspect your board or RAM more than the memory controller. I've run my 3500 Venice as high as HTT 260 without a problem @1T.

So far, from what I've read avoid CBB. It's def worse then ABB and LBB. I haven't seen enough to decide between ABB or LBB tho. It might be the ABB but really not sure

It's seems ABBLE is the best, but noone except the review sites has gotten them..If you get ABBLE I would expect 2.8ghz.

Good for you. Unfortunetely, the general trend appears to be that the CBBLE are the worse ocers. At least from what I've read. If anyone has different opinions from reports they've read, then do post.

bjc, that might be right. I saw someone saying the ABB were the best but I never really saw many results so I wasn't sure. But if only reviewers are getting them that would explain why...

The price of the Venice cores where I live are still expensive. I'm waiting for the cheaper stores to get them. I won't have my mobo for a week or two anyway. I wonderwhether I should get them as soon as the cheaper stores get them or wait until my mobo arrived. Maybe the ABB cores might start showing up then but then again maybe the CBB will be the bulk. Hmm decisions, decisions.

Of course, nothinh is ever going to beat my BBBLE. But you can only get them if you're a sleep with Howard, Blair, Bush or the CEO of AMD so don't ask. So sorry ladies, no way for you to get them at the moment.
 
I have a LBBLE 0516 @ 2.5ghz, my limiting factor is my memory crapping out and a non-working 133 divider on my MSI Neo 2 Plat. The system boots at up to 275 HTT but craps out when entering windows(memory problem), so I believe I could get it running stable at 2.6ghz at least, if only the divider would work...hell at 2.75 maybe my RAM is not letting my system post, but I have no way of checking that yet...damn dividers!!!
