Venice not so futureproof anymore?!

Hi all, hopefully I haven't missed any threads like this...I looked around...anyway


I had a discussion with a friend about the potential of venice cores right now and how long it will be able to stay(in a average PC user's respect)...

I mean, the dual cores right now are pretty afforable in some respect but as a light gamer / college student I still think Venice is a strong option to last me several years...am I wrong to think so?? (and btw, I WILL be making another desktop pretty soon...maybe in couple weeks i'll order...)

It just depends on ones budget and uses really.

Venice 3200 is best bang for buck processor out.. clocks sky high runs cool and only costs $150.

X2's definitly have better future and performance but for a price... a not so low one either..one must decide or not if they value he chip enough to pay it.

It all depends on what you do and how you use your PC. For games for the next year or so, a dual core buys you very little benefit. Just now do ATI and Nvidia have some dual core optimized drivers, and from what I've seen there's a 10% improvement tops. A Venice overclocked to 2.4 or 2.6 Ghz is a very fast CPU, and should be fast for quite awhile.

However, if you do like to multitask a lot, particularly if you multitask demanding applications (encoding a dvd and gaming, or encoding a dvd while burning/watching a movie, for example), then dual core is just a much more appropriate solution.

For the future, there's no question dual core is the way the market is going. Still, if you buy a cheap Venice now, within the next 6 months you should be able to buy a dual core replacement for a fair bit less, so the more you wait, the better the deal gets.

Is anything future proof?

The only thing I can think of right now is PC3200 BH-5 memory. But even that will have its day.

Yeah and that day is the day the M2 socket is released w/ DDR2

With all the apparent cpu cancellations by AMD and the M2 motherboard production already in place I wonder if AMD is preparing for an earlier release of M2. Another speculation is the killoff of those processors because of M2 production (and Dell needs). I know it is The Inquirer but it is interesting speculation. Fun stuff

imo, the venice is the best deal out there for a cpu. People are paying upwards of $300 for a 144 opteron on ebay, since there are so few left now. You can easily find a 3000 or 3200 venice for about $100 on forums. Ive bought 4 of them, I would know. Get a 3200+ venice for $110, overclock to at least 2.6ghz, and be done. Thats what I did. Best bang 4 buck! Opterons run hotter and cost more. Of course overclock somewhat more but hey.

Bought one last week..still shows in stock for all Opterons.

I said on ebay. I know 148 optys new online are around $200. However, people want good stepping opterons and are willing to pay $300-$350 for a 144 or 146. Apparently you didnt know that. Ive seen 3 people in fact trade a 146 opteron for a X2 3800. Which is pretty much same as getting $320 for it.

The venices are kinda like the 2500+ bartons. They are just at that sweet spot. Today, we wouldn't call the 2500+ bartons the best, but its still tagging along and doing its job pretty well. IIRC, the 2500 came about 3 years ago?

Recent Venice steppings are having trouble hitting 2.5GHz, not quite as good as in the hayday. I'd say 2.4GHz is a fair bet.

i was thinking the same thing...but unless dual cores eventually come down to the price of a 3200, it would be a waste of money (might as well get the x2 from the start).

I somewhat agree. But still. You can find a venice for around $100. X2 3800 is $300. Thats a pretty big price difference. Im sure in 6 months a 3200 venice would still be able to be sold for at least like $80 or something. And by then the x2 3800 will probably be alot less than $300.

Processor performance in Single Threaded situations have been fairly stagnant for a couple years now. It doesn't appear that will change soon, at least not dramatically. Multithreaded is where things are going, but how that will affect Single core Venice's is kinda difficult to predict right now.
