Venice and Winchester...Whats the difference?

Whats up people? So ... Whats the difference? I know the Venice has better architecture and suff but how big the the diff..give me the difference in a 3000+ 64Bit Winchester VS 3000+ 64Bit Venice. What will the difference in like 3DMark05? And like HL2/Doom3 FPS?

Venice can overclock more, also fixes the 4 DIMM RAM slot thing (with its new and improved memory controller), also runs a bit hotter, but that's okay, also has SSE3 which might be utilized in the future sometime.

What the hell is SSE3 ? Im a noob. What do you mean "fixes the 4 DIMM RAM slot thing" doesn't the Winchester have a good memory controller. How can it OC more if it will run hotter? And what is the price difference we are talking about here? So many question lol.

Up until Venice, if you wanted to run 4 sticks of RAM in your s939 A64, you had to run it at 166 (333) MHz. With Venice, if you run single-sided RAM, it lets you run 200(400) 1T, and with dual-sided RAM, 200(400) 2T. The command rate (1T vs 2T) does not matter much in Athlon XPs and Pentium 4, but 1T is a lot faster for A64.
Even though Vencie runs hotter, it will clock to a higher speed, albiet also a higher temperature.

So if your planning to upgrde your athlon64, you'd be better off waiting for the venice, rather that getting a newer winchester. Will they still run on current MoBo/Chipsets.

So many terms - its confusing.

I have a list of various Athlon 64s available. Can somone explian the feature differences.
Newcastle - 754 Socket
Winchester - 939 Socket
Venice - 939 Socket, better memory controller

Between Newcastle and Winchester we see the same processor numbers say 3200+ but can distinguish based on the sockets. But how do we distinguish between Winchester and Venice ?

The specs will say winchester or venice. Don't buy from a place that doesn't list what core it has, who knows what you're getting.

Is it worth buying the Venice core over a winchester. I am getting ready to build a new rig should I wait until they are readily available?? or should I just wait until the dual cores come out??? anyone know when that is?

I would try to hold out for a San Diego. Get a 3700+ and it will have 1MB cache, supposedly these OC just as good as the Venice cores. I wouldn't wait on dual core if you want to upgrade in the near future and are on any kind of budget.

What's the San Diego??? any time frame for a release date....or any price estimates??

Nevermind I answered my question....Monarch is taking preorder for the San Diego core right now....ships May 6th. I'm in on this!!!!

Most sites will mark it a Venice or Rev E. It also has 1.3/1.4 V.

Is the 3700+ San Diego core the same as the 3500+ Venice core ? Is the only difference an addl. 512k cache ?
Are the multipliers the same ?

Jose

Yea, the San Diego is a Venice core with 1MB L2 cache. That's the only difference.

How much better is the vence than the winchester for overclocking? If it runs hotter, it does'nt seem to me that it would be better for ocing, and if it is better, wouldn't the difference be very small? Why would you spend money on a venice if you already had a winchester?

If you already have a Winchester I don't think you would be upgrading to a Venice....kind of stupid in my opinion. The San Diego is the way to go anyway....although still not worth upgrading to from a Winchester.

Nope. Still 2T command rate for 4 sticks.

Nope, 1T for 4 single-sided sticks.
