Here's a thought...

* Buy a 640GB WD "Black" with 32MB cache (2 platters)
* Partition off the outer 200GB for your OS & Apps.

= Nice fast, cool running HD for $80

Check out Anandtech's real world testing of the Velociraptor. http://www.anandtech.com/stora...howdoc.aspx?i=3291&p=8

The Velociraptor loaded Company of Heroes a whopping 1.17 seconds quicker compared to the WD Blue.

On the other hand if your real world usage is extracting a 5 GB archive while running a full virus scan at the same time then the Velociraptor or SSD would definitely be worth it. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuch...owdoc.aspx?i=3403&p=15

It all comes down to your usage pattern.
Good post and :thumbsup: for bolded

Just a question, do all of the WD Black models use different platters? like the 500gb vs 640gb vs 1tb

I just setup my 3x RAID 0 with the "old" WD640AAKS - it smokes average 280.8 MB/sec . It is short stroked to 640 MB - not all that short LOL. Bet you that four of those 7200.12's, short stroked to even 500GB would be up well over 300 MB/SEC . How fast is a single velociraptor? Looks like average around 100 MB/sec

That might be...but look at your access times. Most 3 drive RAID's with normal 7200 drives average 12-14ms...a vr is in the 7-8ms range. I'll take the access time over the throughput.
