Veganism is NEVER a health choice. Someone find the link to the study somewhere in Africa where the vegan kids were substantially dumber than the meat eating ones.

The "health" reasonign is the only thing that pisses me off. Moral and religious reasons for not eating meat are perfectly legitimate though.

awww.. c'mon, even a strict carnivore like myself can tell you that vegetables are by and large MUCH healthier than meat, not to mention cheaper.

Not true.. There are a lot of vitamins in meat that you don't get with vegetables, grains, etc. Why do you think vegans have to (or should) take supplements?

The slack-jawed dim-wits I see in threads like this tend to be people such as yourself - proud meat eaters making lots of noise, but saying nothing that is terribly cogent or insightful or even accurate.

btw, to acknowledge the scientific evidence that animals like chickens, pigs and sheep experience pain and suffering when raised in cruel conditions is not anthropomorphizing these animals. it's just acknowledging a basic fact.

I was a vegetarian for a while for ethical rasons. Then I asked myself the same question. I decided that, no it is not more okay to kill plants because they can not get up and move away and the fact they do not have a face.

Do plants suffer?

Heh, I just hit a cat on the way home. Gonna make some jerky out of it. ;)
It would be a shame to waste such perfectly mangled meat. :D

I barely ever eat meat. For the most part I function as a vegetarian myself. I'm simply stating the most common and the most ridiculous reason for vegetarianism.

Rather than whatever other versions or adaptations that were revised to fit the time surrounding their writing?
All of the Bible has been changed in various ways to serve a specific purpose.
If you want to rubbish the NT for being altered to fit a certain thing, then do the same for the rest of the Bible too.

Or are you just Euro bashing?

I've often considered vegetarianism, but thought I could never give up chicken and turkey.

LOL, I love the summary of this thread.

"why is it ok for u to kill plants?"

LOL

Me too. Even funnier is the fact that many plants aren't killed, we only eat the fruit and the plant is allowed to live as long as it keeps producing fruit.

As far as we know, plants aren't very sentient. There are plants that react to stimuli, which itself is confusing because plants have no brain to process senses. I remember reading about an experient focusing on a type of plant that could fold itself up for defense. Once a day a specific scientist would pull a leaf off of it. The plant would eventually fold up as soon as it "saw" him, but reacted normally to other people. This may be an urban legend, but the source seemed credible at the time.

It's because plants don't have a nervous system. Since they're not ambulatory, there's no need for them to feel pain. :p

wasn't there a study that showed plants actually do experience pain?

Listen up, brothers and sisters
Come hear my desperate tale
I speak of our friends of nature
Trapped in the dirt like a jail

Vegetables live in oppression
Served on our tables each night
This killing of veggies is madness
I say we take up the fight

Salads are only for murderers
Cole slaw's a fascist regime
Don't think that they don't have feelings
Just 'cause a radish can't scream

I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (having their insides revealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (burning off calories)
How do you think that feels (bet it hurts really bad)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (and that's a real crime)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (let my vegetables grow)
It's time to stop all this gardening (it's dirty as hell)
Let's call a spade a spade (it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade)

I saw a man eating celery
So I beat him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again
I'll bite him clean in two

I'm a political prisoner
Trapped in a windowless cage
'Cause I stopped the slaughter of turnips
By killing five men in a rage

I told the judge when he sentenced me
"This is my finest hour
I'll kill those farmers again
Just to save one more cauliflower"

I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (having their insides revealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (burning off calories)
How do you think that feels (bet it hurts really bad)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (and that's a real crime)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (let my vegetables grow)
It's time to stop all this gardening (it's dirty as hell)
Let's call a spade a spade (it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade)

How low as people do we dare to stoop
Making young broccolis bleed in the soup
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes
Set potted plants free, don't mash that potato, ah

I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (fates in the stir fry are sealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (you fat gourmet scum)
How do you think that feels (leave them out in the fields)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (V8's genocide)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (yes your compost's a grave)
It's time to stop all this gardening (take up macramé)
Let's call a spade a spade (it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade)

For argument's sake, lets agree that eating plants is the same as eating an animal. Now, it simply becomes a matter of the quantity of animals & plants killed:

Say that for an average animal, it eats x number of plants & animals in its lifetime before it its killed itself. So, for you to eat that animal, x+1 plants & animals have been killed.

For vegetarians, only the plant is "killed" (even though in most cases, it isn't). So the number is just 1.

So, since x+1 > 1, you could say vegetarians want to eat as few living organisms as possible.

That should be obvious. Plants don't feel pain because they don't have any kind of consciousness!!! It seems like a lot of people can only distinguish between "living" and "not living".

there was a study that showed that lettiuce actually has stimuli when it is harvested. So plants do feel pain.

Me? I don't really care. Plants, animals, they're all the same. an animal would have no problem eating my corpse, so why should I have a problem with eating its?
