I lived in Vegas for five years. I never got used to the summer heat. Not much to do outside of the strip and the strip gets old really fast. Plus most of the city is a huge, crime-ridden dump. One of my friends lives in one of the nicer, newer areas (SW / Mountain's Edge) and there were two or three break-ins / home invasions in his area in the past month. Two of my friends' cars were stolen and never found and they lived in the Seven Hills area (one of the other nice areas of (Vegas / Henderson). Not sure how it is in the NW in the Centenial Hills area. That might be a better part of town. I lived in the NE part near Nellis AFB and almost every week I'd hear gunfire, cops and police search copters. The people there were also pretty rude and the drivers were maniacs.

You would have a lot more knowledge than me, but the one thing that struck me when I was in Vegas and the surrounding areas was the lack of rudeness and a seeming willingness by people to go out of their way to be helpful. It was probably this attitude more so than anything that will prompt my wife and I to look at a home in the area in a few years.

I live in southwest Vegas and I absolutely love it. Other than the cost of living it's a great city to live in.
Why is it great? Cite five examples.

Red Rock
Spring Mountain Range
Mt Charleston
No income tax
Low humidity
Valley of Fire
(not in any order)
Also, there are only a couple of "not nice"/ghetto areas (north of downtown town).
One just has to get a couple of blocks off the strip to realize that there are neighborhoods.

There is better, more authentic food to be had off the strip too. Some of my better meals have been nowhere near the strip. For example, Mimmo Ferraro's is still one of the best Italian meals I've had in the US.
