So I work at UNLV where CNN is holding the dem debate tonight. My department is right next door to the cox pavilion and I was given the day off because there was no possible way to get in and out of my office due to the various restrictions.
The stadium where they are having it seats 4600, only 2400 were invited, of which only 600 UNLV people got tickets. CNN selected the audience - there was a "lottery" website for UNLV that you entered in your party affiliation, along with all sorts of other info. Supposedly 1200 people registered from UNLV (I wasn't picked - assume probably because I put registered as independent as it seemed to be a pattern among others i work with that also didn't get picked). The person from my office who has a husband who was in the military and died (not while in combat) was selected along with the director and the assistant director. Others on campus have encountered the same pattern - only those in high level positions, only those with military connections. A few were asked to submit questions but it was clear that you were only allowed to ask questions that Hillary or Obama would answer to. Everything was centered around those two. Posters went up on Weds for richardson, they were down today. Supporters for obama have inundated everywhere. for some reason this campus is swarmed with them carrying posters, posting signs, handing out stuff.
CNN keeps saying Hilary holds a large lead in NV...well I'm not sure where thats coming from. In my group of 12 or so at work only 1 supports Hilary. Maybe its the univ atmosphere. Among the union groups from what I've read in the paper here in Vegas there is no support for Hilary because she came here a few months back and totally brushed back the casino dealers/workers unions. Maybe reno loves her - but form my understanding Reno is a more right wing sorta town.
So just wanted to let you know those interesting facts for the debate so you knew what happened behind the scenes.
Hope they do the school justice showing off our arena and wonderful 70f+ weather right now!
