Do what I did, buy a good dvd/vcr combo. I got a nice Samsung one at Best Buy for under $200.

Given that you have an existing library of VHS & you already have a PS2 , I would buy another VCR.

Noooooo!! No combos!

Just buy a vcr, they're so cheap.

Get a decent toshiba or panasonic VCR for like $60 or $70 and then an Apex entry level DVD for ~ $55. That way, you can still use your old movie collection, yet have a cheapie DVD player for movie rentals and what not.

No point in dumping all your movies unless you want to free up space IMHO.

You have DVD in the PS2, what you really need is a PVR (Tivo or ReplayTV)

Combos break, and then you are without 2 functions instead of 1

Combos also tend to skimp on quality

Both or separate.

$59 Panasonic VCR or $89 Toshiba VCR @ CostCo
$89 Panasonic DVD Player or $99 Toshiba DVD Player @ CostCo
Combo DVD/VHS all in one player sells for around $159 - $199 @ CostCo (these are sold elsewhere as well)

i would kinda like the extra room the videos are taking up. and i work at a video store so i can always just rent ones i really wanna watch.. but selling them all would take some time on ebay, but having a dvd player so i could play mp3's on it while i play quake3 or something would be nice so i wouldn't have to have winamp playing...remote control instead of ps2 controller.. more features...right now i'm looking at this it's like 90 bucks i'm trying to stay under 100 excluding tax...

That looks like a decent model but I'd also check out the $89 Panasonic and $99 Toshiba @ CostCo B&M.

AHHHH!!! Don't get a Panasonic! Their older products were excellent but their newer stuff is junk. I bought a Panasonic VCR less than a year ago and it was a total piece of junk. It had very few features and a lot of design flaws. I returned it pretty quickly. I also bought a Panasonic TV a year ago but didn't realize how bad it was until after the return period was over. I got a Samsung VR-9260 VCR and I'm EXTREMELY happy with it. If you need a new VCR I HIGHLY recommend it.

Go for the DVD. I held off on buying a CD player for a long time, because I had so many cassettes. In the end, I had to succomb to technology. It's inevitable. Don't be like these 40-year-old guys stuck in the 70's playing records and 8-tracks.

[EDIT] Don't buy a Panasonic. I read online about how Panasonic owners were reporting a 1-year trouble-free life of the DVD players, and then they'd take a crap. Sure enough, I knew 3 friends with Panasonic DVD players, and they started jeeping out after a year. This was back in '99. They may have improved their design since then. I just replaced my $500 Sony DVD player that I bought in '99 with a new $150 Sony, because it plays MP3's and reads DVD-R's.

Since everyone is anti-Panasonic, I saw a Toshiba DVD/VCR combo all in one for $199 at CostCo B&M.

A VCR would also let you record TV w/o getting a PVR, which is probably more than a VCR or DVD.

Everyone says that argument, but in reality that hardly ever happens. If a function breaks, get it fixed

Toshiba just came out with a nice combo unit, as did SONY.

get the dvd player. vcr is only for recording tv shows now if u don't have replaytv:p all those tapes u have are kinda obsolete editions now. better to go rent new special edditions with 5.1 surround and special features:)
