VCR-->Computer Video File. How?

Since you can download Simpsons episodes all over the place, I'm assuming there's a fairly easy way to this.

I want to take a TV show that I recorded onto a VCR, and somehow take it on the computer in the form of some video file (MPEG, AVI, whatever). I'd later burn it onto a CD or something.

How do I do this? What cables or whatever do I need? Software? Freeware? 😉

Thanks guys.

Oh crap, you need a whole separate card? I have a Riva TNT as my video card (STB Velocity 4400) but I don't know anything about video capture cards.

How did you think you were going to get it into your PC?

Osmosis?

Well in all my newbieness, I thought you could just use some sort of software and your video/sound card would capture it. Silly me. How much do these things run for?

They are anywhere between $0 and $a lot. saying 0, because in Hot deals forum, there's a PCTV for free AR at compusa, but OOS already. I, no teh other hand, got a Matrox RT2500 for $800 which captures Yellow/Red/White and DV, and exports Yellow/Red/White and DV.

You should be able to pick up a USB based video capture device (Pinnacle & Dazzle are two examples) for around $50. PCI & higher end solutions will obviously cost more, but would likely be overkill for what you want/need.

newsgroups and what website? who's a known quality poster btw

<< can the same things that are done with a TV capture card be done with a video card with video in/out? >>

Video in receives it (via video device) so yes, video out transmits the video back out

osmosis! lmfao!

I have an ATI AIW 128 Pro PCI.
1. Can it coexist with my GF2 GTS AGP?
2. What is the best software suit to convert stuff from video tape to CD? I need some sort of set-it-and-forget-it software.
