I originally posted this to Video Cards, because I didn't click on the right thing...

I'm trying to tab down an issue I've been having recently with my main system getting a lot hotter than I'd like it to. It still runs stable, so long as I use a catalyst driver version from February or earlier. The last two revisions give me constant errors. First, the rundown on the cards.

System 1
Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz w/ Hyper-Threading, Intel i865 OEM motherboard
1gm PC3200 memory (2x512)

Tyan G9800 Pro Video Card
SB Audigy2

2x Maxtor 200gb PATA drives

System 2
Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz, Intel OEM motherboard
1gm PC2700 memory (2x512)

OEM Radeon 9700 Pro Video Card
SB Live 5.1
Leadtek WinFastTV Pro 2000

2x Maxtor 160gb PATA drives

Now where it gets strange is that system 1 typically runs at an ambient temperature of 97 degrees, F. System 2 runs at 74 degrees, F. I expect some difference in temp since they P4 with HT and a higher clock will be hotter. However, it gave an unexpededly high temp when it was on an AMD board as well. The other system is pretty cool for having a TV tuner in there as well.

The one thing I have noticed is that when running a Card Monitor (provided by Tyan) on the system, it will occasionaly give me a Voltage warning, that the VCORE for the AGP card has dropped below threshold. The same test bed also elevates the temp of the card by about 10 degrees, so I didn't use it very long.

Would a dipping voltage cause more heat to be generated by the card? I'm just trying to get the temp of the system to a more manageable level. I don't like it when it has it's own body temperature, it makes me think it's trying to act human.

If you are talking about ambient air temp inside the case, the first system is going to run hotter with the faster cpu and video card. The difference could also be case/fan/airflow related. As far as the Vcore for video card.. maybe your psu isn't up to the task? You need to give a lot more info to get a better answer. My system runs at about 85F at idle, depending on room temp. 2.6c@3.41, 9800pro, 200gig ide, 36gig 15k scsi, capture card, etc, etc....
