Not necessarily....
depends on the paste!

All the AS series thermal pastes ask for just a drop the size of a grain of rice on the CPU!!

Others do want there brand spread evenly.

Yet to be honest I have experimented with other brands and that grain of rice the AS peeps talk about also works with other brands of thermal paste!!
*******see disclaimer****
I was using my equipment and I understood full well that I could fry something by doing these experiments!!
I am not responsible for any acts of stupidity or even well thought out acts of stoopidity on anybody elses part!!

Those XP90s or notorious for having heat problems as most of the heat is carried by the center heat pipe. Get a TT Big Typhoon. As for high Mobo temps, you may want to do what I do. I have a 80mm pusher fan connected to a 45 deg fan duct mod connected to one of those 80mm extender pipes that come in some cases for CPU air inlet. I have the fan blow right on the SB, NB and RAM. Some people remove the IHS but I don't think it yields enough advantage to warrant the risk of pulling the die off the chip carrier. I'm at about the limit on my TT103 fanless with a 3700 at 45 deg and 1.425Vcore. Both of these TTcoolers have 6 heatpipes positioned as close to the center as possible.

Now on the ThermalRight website in a pdf document it does tell you how to mount the XP90 and it does say that temps will be affected if you mount the XP90 with the heatpipes facing downward.
Yet the affected temps only varie by a few degrees celcius!!

AlabamaCajun has no clue what is being discussed!!
There is nothing wrong with the XP 90`s!!
They are only notorius for having good solid temps!!
Also unlike the Big Typhoon you don`t have to remove the mothermoard to instsall the XP90!!
The Big Typhoon is exactly the same or on par with the XP9- copper....as well as thew XP120 the zalman 9500 or the Scythe Ninja they are all within 1-3c of each other temp wise!!

The Scythe Ninja is considered to be the new Big Boy on the streets!!

Do NOT mess with the heatspreader!!
Do Not get a different Heatsink.
Whats I find interesting is somebody would advise you spouting things that are not true.....All the XP series heatsinks have no such issues as Cajun tried to tell you existed!!

I agree totally with gamingphreek!!!
Nice post dude!!

oops thought this thread was dead. Havent checked back for a while.

UPDATE:
Got meself some AS5 and did what gamingfreak suggested: take off HSF reapply goo (AS5). Also got a VF-700 for the 7800GT. At the moment absolutely NO diference in GPU temp or CPU temp. They are both running just as high has before. AS5 does have an 8 days break in period so I might see how it goes in a week.
So far very disappointed.
Everyone is getting good results from AS5+XP-90+panaflo, VF-700+AS5. What the hell am I doing wrong?!
