VCD vs. DIVX Which has better quality?

I have a bet with a friend for $100 that DIVX have better quality than the standard VCD. The divx I am talking about are similiar to the ones that you get when you encode a 1:30h movie into 700MB worth of data. VCD are the standard ones that you can buy in the store. Which have better quality?

I would say that DiVX has by far the better quality in both video and audio for the same size file as compared to VCD.
Also, I believe a DiVX that takes up 700MB is still better than a 2 disc set of VCD.

Looks like you got a cool $100 to play with!

Cant really say because I have encoded some VCDs that look and sound fantastic. But, on whole, DIVX looks better. The majority will say the same. I have tried both in my encoding and can get very good results in both.

Divx will be better, even at low bit rates like 500kb/s (it's bits). Those VCD you buy in store are not properly encoded like the one we do at home, like using variable bit rate.

FYI, vcd is mpeg 1.

It all depends on the decoding. A vcd can look really good and take up many cds, on the other hand Divx can be encoded really good and take a 700mb cdr, which is great. Size is the only factor here I think.

DiVX is a compression format, VCD is a specific resolution, bitrate and audio used to play in "VCD players". The two aren't in the same field. VCD uses mpeg 1 compression and if you want to compare Mpeg1 to DiVX, DiVX does give better quality for the compression it gives. It all depends on how high a bitrate you set your DiVX to encode at. However, for the same size (MB) as Mpeg1, DiVX does give higher quality.

<< Divx is much better quality. To bad we dont have divx players. >>

there are chips capable of decoding iso pmeg4, and they will be incorporated into standalone players soon. divx5 is supposed to be 100% iso mpeg4 compliant, so by the end of the year you should be able to buy a divx player. rejoice. ::cross fingers::

cool. maybe I should wait on getting a dvd player till they come out.

The only reason I would say VCD/SVCD is better is because they can be played on a normal standalone dvd player assuming the player plays cdr and cdrw discs. It will be great once they start playing divx.

Hands down Divx, the very best encodings I've done of ANY codec period, using Nandub SBC. Of course you could encode a divx file of poorer quality than a compliant VCD, but in any real comparison be it file size, audio quality, video quality, Divx wins. The only things better about VCD, easily purchased(online), play on standalone players(portability) and less CPU utilization.
