Hello guys,
I want to learn how to work with MS windows server 2012 R2, so I decided to install virtual server (2012 r2) and than a virtual client PC (MS Windows 8.1 Pro). I am using virtualbox.
My plan is to create Active Directory, DNS and DHCP server on my virtual server and than test it, if it is working correctly using my virtual client PC. I have succesfully managed to do this with a few "how to" tutorials and it is working correctly, but I have 1 question about the DHCP server. Scope of my virtual DHCP server is set to 192.168.35/45.
I have 1 physical network, using router (dlink dir 645) with own DHCP server (scope 192.168.0.100/254), gateway is 192.168.0.1.
In virtualbox I have set up the virtual server (static IP - 192.168.0.150) to network BRIDGED mode, to my real network (to gain internet access). I have the same settings on my virtual client, BRIDGED mode to my real network too, and this is where I think it should create collision, or just simply shouldnt work correctly.
If I understand it correctly, everything is now in 1 network, virtual server + client + router + HOST PC, so in the end I am running 2 DHCP servers in 1 network (1st router, 2nd virtual server) but with different scopes, why is it working? Is there some kind of rule, if the device gets IP from 1st DHCP server than it is not getting IP from the 2nd one? Or is it working this way, the device gets in the 1st place IP address from the 1st DHCP server and than it is replaced with IP from the 2nd DHCP server and if yes, is there a priority or is it random and I am just lucky, its working?
My virtual client PC is getting correct IP address 192.168.0.35, my internet connection works and I am able to communicate with my server, this is what I want, but I dont know why it works...
I would like to make vlan for my virtual machines and than connect the server through bridge to my real network, how to make this work? What settings should I set up in virtualbox to my client ? I was trying to set up for both server+client internal network setting in VB menu, but in the end I dont know how to make bridge between the server-real network.
