variable sound levels in windows?

Hey guys! I couldn't find the answer online but i figured maybe one of you guys would know...

One of my addictions since way back when is civ2. Also, I happen to like listening to classical music. The problem here is that the sounds for civ2 are so loud that I can't do both at the same time.

Is there any way to make the music like 7/10 in sound while leaving the civ2 app at 3/10 in sound?

There is no "ingame" sound control and if i raise the volume on my mp3 player, the entire computer (including the game) gets loud.

This has been bugging me for a few years but i never thought to ask anyone about it 🙂

Thanks!

Are you using Winamp? If so, change its output in the settings from wave output to DirectSound output. Then when you change the volume in winamp, it doesn't affect the master volume setting in Windows.

Or do I have that backwards? Either way, change the output setting from Waveout - > Directsound, or the other way around. I can't remember which way it goes.
