Read between the lines. Sony is a virulent poison, they'll find an entry and seep into Vanguard, infecting it, ruining it. I had been looking forward to this title since 2003 and I was absolutely crushed when I heard the news. I won't be buying it now because of this. Look at the craptacular site Sony's already put up for it - Link.

it looks exactly like every other one of their mmo's sites...
oh god NO

wow

it looked to be another grindyourheartoutthenraidtilyougoblind type mmo anyway, but still...station.com...wow

I'm guessing that the MMOG makers won't pass this holiday season up. With the WoW expansion nearby, it will be released in time for holiday shoppers whether it's ready or not, and I doubt it will be. With that kind of pressure from one side, and Sony on the other, Vanguard will likely be squeezed out for christmas as well, probably in a similar state of nowhere-fscking-near readiness.

Looks pretty good, I will try it but I lose interest in most all fantasy MMO's because of all the unintelligent people who flock to them. There's intelligent people too but not as many. One thing that doesn't sound appetizing to me is the lack of instancing. Call me whatever name you want but I like tasteful instancing. Also, if there's kill/loot stealing my stay in this game will be VERY short lived. One of the reasons I quit WoW (out of many) was that when I engaged a spawn to mine the ore they were guarding some knucklehead would always come running up while I was fighting and pillage the ore deposit.

Thread from the dead! Now that it's been resurrected, I may as well mention that someone I know is in the VG beta (I got an invite but have no interest). He says there are about a million advertisements to click through in order to log in, par for the course for Sony/SOE games. Sheesh, and this is just the beta. The finished product will probably make you sit through 20 minutes of ads like you do at a movie theater.

And while I'm at it, I'll mention something else about WoW; I know of no other MMOG that doesn't simply stop at allowing PvP, but gives it structure and rewards on the order of WoW's PvP system. Adds a whole other side to the game.

Lol.......very doubtful, getting back on topic, latest preview here at Worthplaying.

There is a great deal of work ahead of SGO before this is in good shape for mass consumption. However, they?re off to a great start as it stands right now. For sheer variety, few titles can rival what I?ve seen during my brief time in this beta.

My overall impression is that Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler looked at EverQuest 2, decided it didn?t feel enough like their original vision for EverQuest, and decided to make their own sequel. So far, they seem to be on the right track, I can?t help but think that there will be many old EQ players who will feel a strong resonance with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. I certainly do.

I loved EQ, but the absence of a real PvP system eventually lead me to leave it for WoW.

The most fun I ever had in EQ was when they did the Discord contest. That was the one where they had that one server all vs all, and when you die you go back to level 1. Now granted I think that's going a bit far, but my main complaint about WoW is that death really doesn't mean anything; it's a minor inconvenience at best.

I like a lot of what I've read about Vanguard, but I'm scared that there will be no PvP of any kind. To me PvP makes the game when the surroundings get tired.

I was going to look into this game, but then so many new games and console came out, and people want me to play WoW again for the expansion. So I don't think I'll even have time to give it a fair shot.

I intend to try it, but if its too much like WoW, its likely going to collect dust. Might end up as a coaster, if it turns out to be a WoW clone.

Something that bugs me, people complain about the 'ads' at the beginning of a game. EQ2 for instance, there's a Dell ad, an Nvidia ad, and an Intel ad. To click through them all takes about 1.5 seconds. Clicking through the opening videos in most games takes the same about of time. Heck, some games don't even let you click through the videos, like BF1942 and BF2. You have to manually remove the video files to bypass them.

I played for about 3-4 months in the beta, and it was going in a great direction. I'm not playing atm, just don't have the time or HDD space on my laptop atm (22gb installed... i'm sure it's probably bigger now). The world is HUGE, lots of content, quest etc. Crafting is taken to a whole new level, similar to Horizon i'm told, but even more involved. It's anything but WoW like. Travel is not easy. If you want to travel across the continent or to a new continent, it's going to take WORK. Often, you'll see people creating caravans so that they can travel together (so the lower level people don't get killed)... the caravan system is like a group system, you create a 'group' of people called a caravan, and wherever the caravan travel, you'll travel along as well... even when you're logged out.

When one of the continents were coming down for work, people had to leave it so their characters wouldn't be stuck on the continent, so people created caravans to leave for other areas. Low level people would log out for a couple of days while the higher level people make the journey, and when they got to the new destination, they would log back into where the caravan camped.

Banks are not universal either. If you store things in one bank, you can only access it from that bank. Good thing is that your horse pretty much becomes a travelling bank as well. You can park your horse outside a dungeon, go in, loot up, go back outside, unload it onto your horse, and go back in. No need to travel back to town.

Death penalty... lol if you like WoW, you're probably going to hate Vanguard. If you die, you're naked, and you need to retrieve your corpse. Hopefully you ran to a safe place that you can retrieve it, or you have a second set of equipment on your horse, boat, or in a nearby bank. Or you have friends that can help you. I personally love corpse retrieval. Makes the game exciting... knowing that you're deep in a dungeon, and if you're not careful, you can leave your corpse in a very bad place.

I've heard a lot of beta impressions from people ranging the spectrum from WoW kiddies to MMOG veterans. Across the board, very few have been favorable - including that of the aquaintance of mine in beta, who I met in EQ1 way back when. That you found a  one means very little to me.

FWIW Brad left EQ1 halfway through work on the Luclin expansion, well before EQ2 was on the drawing board. He cited wanting to work on his own project, but if you read between the lines and apply logic to his motives, you could make a strong case for personal differences with Sony/SOE. Indeed, the minute he left they changed the game so much they may as well have renamed it, and EQ1 as many knew and loved it died when he walked out the door. It wouldn't surprise me if he was threatened with a libel suit if he were to reveal his reasons for leaving.

For all its faults, WoW doesn't have ads.

WoW I think is crap, yes I'm entitled to my opinion and their are just too many stupid kiddies playing WoW nowadays, its not even in my top 100 MMORPGs,yes there are loads of people that hate WoW .....first WAIT until Vanguard is released ,never judge a game by a friend's opinion that's beta testing, wait until the game is out in retail ,then judge Vanguard only if you are playing it yourself.

Amazes me how people forget about simple things like that, personally I'm going to give it a chance and see what the retail version is like, then see if it has ads.

Very hard to knock a game that's not even out yet,for the most part its all speculation.Gameplay and will be the key to its success.

I agree, the playerbase is the worst part of WoW. Luckily the interface system allows for the creation and use of ignore addons. Additionally, being horde, I can't converse with about 60-70% of its total players, and am part of what's generally considered the more mature side.

I'm not basing my opinion of VG on a friend's beta opinion. I'm basing it on years of experience with a bucket of toilet scum known as Sony, and on the evidence pointing toward them being the ones calling the shots with VG.

I don't think it is healthy to have a top 100 MMORPG list ;)

WoW's interface blows, thing of beauty my butt. Without the aftermarket mods and overlays, its useless. Only a handful of toolbars, no ingame custimization, yck. The unofficial overlays and mods fix a lot of these issues though. EQ2's interface is 100% customizable right out of the box.

If WoW is best MMO out there, as you say, then the MMORPG genre is dead on its feet. :(

This thread is turning into another SOE/WoW flamefest, so I'm not going to post in here or read this thread anymore. Anytime a thread is made that regards SOE in anyway, people immediately start bashing them. Everything they do is right, everything Blizzard does is right, etc etc etc, yadda, yadda, yadd.

in other words, I'm going to take a fat dump in this thread, leave, and let you all discuss how it smells.

Edit: I'm an soe lover- I detest WoW and played to level 23 before I quit but have had an active Eq2 account since day 1.

I was looking forward to Vanguard but no longer. I have spoken to some beta testers and there is a lot of disappointment with how it looks. I pray this is from beta and will change, but from what I was told, the game is basically a mix of the best parts of both WoW and Eq2 (which is smart I guess) but with no content to match.

Still though, that should change by release as long as they don't rush it. The game is far from ready.

You obviously havent played wow in over 8 months.. they addressed all that about the UI.. and still elft it customizable..
and WoW is still the best MMO out there and is alot of fun especially for us peeps that can only play a couple hours a week.. makes me still feel im getting somewhere.. unlike EQ EQ2 or anything else out there..
the rest system and instanced dungeons and pvp system was pure genious..

with all that said I loved EQ1.. and am waiting for brad/aradune to get Vangard out the door with open arms. I hope they have lerned thier lessons from wow.. that peeps dont want a super uber grind like EQ1 anmymore.. we want a fun light grind with tons of content along the way.. and incentives for casual players to play as well as hardcores.

The thread is about whether we were looking forward to the title and why. Since Sony/SOE is involved with the title and is the reason many are no longer looking forward to it, this is quite pertinent. The only threadcrapping is you being unable to allow others this opinion, dragging WoW into the mix and trying to hijack the thread.

I cannot forgive Sony for what they did to SWG(Pre Cu the game was so much fun and awesome),however from what I read they are only handling the payment /loggin side of Vanguard and have nothing to do with the development stage.

We all know it takes well over a year for any new MMORPG to mature and build up the player base.Be interesting to see what new MMORPGs are still doing well down the road.

The other new MMORPGs I'm looking forward too are Stargate,Star Trek and maybe Warhammer.

I don't think it is healthy to have a top 100 MMORPG list

Ok Skace you got me,only top 10 then ;).
