While I wouldn't recommend the game in general, for a variety of reason, you're playing it, so I'll give you 2 pieces of advice on how to enjoy it.

1. Find the magic sword when you get captured and surgically attach it to Chris. It is by far the best weapon in the game, and I think the only item that you can take through the time transition.
2. If you're having trouble with combat, find a miniboss vampire. Kill it. Then use awaken on it, and kill it again - preferably by draining it dry to reclaim the bloodpoints. Awaken it again. Drain it. Repeat until you've got enough XP to make yourself combat worthy.

Think of PS:T more as a graphic interactive novel. The gameplay/combat is nothing to get excited about, but it's secondary.

And install the unofficial patch.

PS:T is fUgly to the Max ... i don't remember anything this BAD back in '99
:frown:
...Unreal was beautiful and a joy to play ... even years later

I generally don't recommend the game because I simply didn't enjoy it. At it's core, it's pretty basic click, click, click hack and slash. While you get a party, the party AI is basically brain dead. The dungeons end up being awfully repetitive, and when you get right down to it, there's zippo cool factor when it comes to gameplay - you just don't get any really interesting abilities, and it's lacking in genuinely impressive moments or sections. Plotwise, it's well...weak. Not horrible, by any stretch, but not the kind of thing you'll want to talk about a whole bunch when it's over either.

i started it ..

it is a WEIRD combo of D&D and FPS in third person ... you click the mouse to move [like NWN] ... not WASD like FPS but not "top down" camera :p
:Q

GFX are pretty awful ... for '07 ... but OK for 2000 ... and a HECK of a lot better than PS:T

looks like a possible transition game ... i'll stay with it as long as i can ... perhaps i will like it
--perhaps not

thanks for all your input

If you take a look at the changelog for what 3.4 fixes from this version back to 0.1 its an amazing effort. I played the game with official 1.2 and maybe fixpack version 0.2 or something way back when.

So buggy I put it down less then 25% through. Then I played recently with patch 3.3 and its amazing that this guy and his crew actually made this buggy game playable and enjoyable and mostly bug free.

I bought Bloodlines after playing Redemption. Bloodlines was just way too buggy for me, I never got that far. I loved Redemption though. I played through it twice, for its time I think it was a great game. It really shows its age now though. It had a pretty good mix of action and rpg elements to it. I liked the story as well. Maybe one day I'll give Bloodlines a shot again. For me it was definitely worth buying.

EDIT: What other newer games are there that are like Redemption?

i really need to find a manual ... i just got lost wandering thru the town and talking to the few NPCs ... no money and off to the mines ...

or a walkthru ... i will google for it

i don't remember any third person shooters that use the mouse to move ... similar type of RPG might be NWN2 ... or KoTOR ... but they are "top down" view [mostly ... you can adjust the camera to approximate Redemption's view in NWN2] ...

Bloodlines is *playable* with 1.2 ... probably much better with 3.4 ;)

Legacy of Kain was a pure FPS that only used the mouse ... but i am unaware of anything quite like Redemption ...

maybe the thief series ... but it is a sneaker that plays with WASD

and the GFX in Redemption are a lot like Thief ... SS2 ... crappy by today's standards ... although to be fair, with 'interactive" shadows ... and ... WORLDS better than PS:T

I liked Redemption when i played through it shortly after its major patch. If you can imagine playing a game like this without being able to pause and issue attack and cast orders then you know why people were so upset with it at first. Games that have come since such as KOTOR have done what it attempted with more success, and Redemption's story and interactivity were a little thin so it may try your patience. None the less i would still recommend it to anyone who likes games of the BG, KOTOR, NWN sort of variety.

One of things that i remember being handy were a printout of the spells and attributes their effects on the game(they didnt have any sort of tool tip definitions). There were spells that were used constantly and some that i never used once. Also manually controlling any character who was using a rapid fire weapon(assult rifles, chain saw, etc). The AI would fire a burst and then pause, fire, pause. If you controlled the same person and held down the attack key on your target(rigt mouse?) you would let the whole clip go, or grind away with the chain saw rather than taking a swipe and pausing. The AI was really bad at managing spells, or rather too liberal with them. The behavior was adjustable and i remember setting it to never cast and micro managing the party.

Vampire bloodlines could have been such an AWESOME game. i played it pretty far through and loved it, but eventually the bugs were just so out of control I had to stop. I don't know if I could go back and try to play through it all the way again now though :( .

They are still updating even today !! well the community. They released a new patch this month i believe. So its on going fixing process ;)
