Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 75% Off on Steam

HOLYSHITWHATTTHEFUCK

I'm so glad I didn't buy this for $13 during the summer sale. $5? Instant buy. This is the first time ever it's been on sale for 75% off (it's a 5-year-old game).

Please, please, please remember to install the unofficial fan-made patch. It fixes all of the bugs, balance issues, and more in the retail version. You can get it here. Basically, not long after the game was released, all of the developers were fired and they were never able to release any patches. Damn shame too.

There are 2 "unofficial" patches for this game. I believe the Tessmage? or something like that, version is more true to the original gameplay, and the WESP version (linked a couple posts above mine) alters the original game a good bit.

Awesome! I was just looking to get this last week and didn't 🙂

wait...the developers were fired? Do they still get royalties? If not, screw em, I'll just steal it ;p

Nope. One of the developers actually posted a Q&A thread on Reddit.com not too long ago, and as it turns out, he doesn't receive a single penny from the sales now. Fun fact: If you buy this game, all of the profits go directly to Activision. 😳 Normally I don't advocate piracy, but I guess in this case... *cough*cough*

Seriously though, might as well just spend the $5 for the convenience of having it on Steam. It's a fantastic game and you'll be showing Activision by voting with your wallet.

Always heard of the game, and at $5, might as well try it. It'll just be another one of the 100 or so games I bought and will never play. :awe:

It's $5 for a legal copy. Buy it, and enjoy one of the best PC RPGs.

The Troika developers did get paid by Activision, it's just that Troika then went bankrupt. So yes, ex-employees don't still collect royalties from a non-existent company. That's not a good reason to steal it.

Also, the Wesp patch can either be installed as basic (= the original design, just bug fixes) or with all of Wesp's own tweaks and changes.

There's a huge thread on VTMB over at ArsTechnica if you want tips and help.

I'd suggest either the Tessmage or Wesp Basic version for your first playthrough. The Toreador bloodline is the easiest to play (pump up Celerity), with melee weapons easier than guns. Stealth really helps in some spots, as does the Persuade skill. You can skip Seduction in your first play-through.

Once it finishes downloading I'll let you know.

Can somebody give me the links to what exact patches/mods I need to be able to have a nice play through my first time?

Just the Wesp patch linked above, choosing the Basic install option. It has the last official patch and other fixes rolled into it already so it's all that you need.

The vanilla game is great as-is (with the above fixes), you should play it that way the first time.

Ya, I paid $13.39 on July 1.

I'm torn on whether I want this or not. What other games does it compare to?

It's a story-driven RPG, more like Star Wars KoTOR 1-2 and Mass Effect than Oblivion. (Aside from the goth setting, music and perpetual night.)

It's by Troika, ex-Black Isle designers, the ones that didn't end up at Obsidian.

You play a newly-made vampire in modern California, so there are computers, guns, and an urban setting instead of a dungeon with wizards.

It does a great job of making you feel superhuman. Bullets don't do much to you, a normal human thug is no match for your strength, and depending on your bloodline you have additional powers like near-invisibility or incredible speed.

Ok, question that may determine if I buy this. I know in this game you become a vampire. And I know this is a choose-your-own-adventure style RPG. So, can you as the player try to run from your nature as a vampire and still be "good"?

Yes, you start with a certain level of Humanity that is lost by making some of the more evil choices such as feeding on humans to the point that they die.

You're one of the damned, but you can still act in a mostly good manner.

I don't usually play games like GTA IV where the only path is criminal or evil, and I have no problems with the choices in this game

You don't have to be evil in GTA IV. I have a nice apartment, go on dates that I meet online at the internet cafe, play darts, pool, bowling, etc. It's like the Sims but with driving.
