Valve Cancels Portal 2's press event at E3

At least that's the articles' title:

As far as I can understand it's the event of Portal 2's presentation that is being canceled and not the game itself, unless I've read it wrong. But anyhow Valve is seemingly preparing to replace that event with a "surprise". Anyone has a bet for Left 4 Dead 3? Because we all know that Episode 3 is still a matter of imagination...

Time will tell.

I haven't been following valve news lately, but is hl2ep3 still being postponed? The last I heard was 2011, but I'm kinda getting to the point where I don't give a crap anymore.

Last I thought anyone heard was "when it's done." I would shit myself and PC gamers the world over would rejoice if this was the announcement of the release date. If they really want to steal the show that's what they should do.

The surprise is that the Half Life and Left 4 Dead universe are one in the same. Half Life 1 takes place slightly before the L4D zombie outbreak, with the outbreak weakening the human race to be easily conquered by the Combine. The years pass where Gordon Freeman and Adrian Shephard are still in stasis and then Freeman is released by G-Man to play his part in HL2 and Eps 1 and 2...

This brings us to Left 4 Dead: Episode 3. The zombie outbreak is now long forgotten, but has somehow managed to survive in a carrier that escaped the Combine by using portal technology. The infection mutates and is now infecting Combine, devastating their populations but turning them into an even bigger problem for the humans on Earth who have long been resistant to the virus.

G-Man releases Adrian Shephard from stasis to join Gordon Freeman, Alyx Vance, and Barney Calhoun as the new "four survivors" as they battle typical Combine forces as well as their mutated zombie forms (including the head-crab zombies!).

The icing on the cake (which is actually a lie), is that its not just Left 4 Dead + Half Life, the Portal crossover is made at the same time as well. We have Gordon with the gravity gun, Alyx with the portal gun, Barney with some nasty combine weaponry, and Adrian comes out of stasis with yet another surprise...

If this were true, or even if they were able to remotely weave the stories of those games together like that, it would be EPIC.

Epic failure.

There's not even a trace of combine in the entire L4D universe. If they announced that they were going to tie the two together, I would jump off Valve's ship. I would also jump off of their ship if they announced L4D3.

I'm with this guy. 😀

The surprise will be that Portal 2 is being renamed to Portal 2:Episode 1. This will allow more frequent Portal releases by going with episodic content updates rather than just releasing completely new versions of the game every few years. 😉

they just didn't have enough cake for everybody.

but how about incorporating the portal gun into a shooter? picture this: a soldier patrolling the entrance of a secret base you need to infiltrate, suddenly that soldier falls into a portal to the nearest highway and gets run over by an 18-wheeler.

or you could always make a guy fall into an infinite loop and laugh hysterically as he accelerates to light speed and disintegrates at the atomic level! (since gravity is constantly accelerating and the portals keep the momentum of the object that enters them)

Well, he would still reach maximum free fall speed, meaning he wouldn't accelerate anymore due to air resistance.

Combining the portal gun with the gravity gun has potential though. If some soldiers were behind a building, you could create a portal above them and fire large objects through it with the gravity gun, causing them to drop right on their heads!

There's the wonderful thing called terminal velocity. Since there's still atmosphere between the two portals, the victim will never achieve such speeds.

This right here! Post of the decade.

I was always under the impression Portal was just a test of something in their engine they were prepping for Half Life. It just happened to be a very clever and well thought out game. Weren't there rumors that the main chracter in Portal was a new character in HL? I would imagine that Gordon Freeman and this mystery woman meet up and Gordon gets the portal gun. That is what I always thought throughout Portal.

Pshh, he just forgot to mention that it was in space!

If the portals were to loop someone in free fall in a vacuum there would be no reason they couldn't survive the speeds. The very friction from the atmosphere that causes terminal velocity wouldn't be there to rip them apart.

Of course their blood boiling due to no atmospheric pressure and super low temperatures would kill pretty quickly without a space suit.
