Value for money processor?

Would agree with Zebo's above suggestion, though it is difficult to make any suggestions without a more firm budget range ("value for money" is a bit vague, and highly subjective).

Also note that the existing board and processor can be sold (if nowhere else, then here) to recoup a portion of the upgrade costs.

If you decide to go that route, or any skt754 A64 route, be sure and select AX core. It's the later revs with high levels of OC ability.

Well! Fine!! So its more like a P4@2.8! Still, in games its waaaay better than a P4 (or Celeron for such matter) at same PR/clock speed, and, price-performance wise, well, there is no discussing there, now, is there?

To recommed sempron 3100 is pretty lame for a varity of reasons IMO..

1. A64 2800 is same Ghz as Sempron 3100, Both 1.8
2. A64 2800 is 3% faster at stock speed due to 512 KB cache vs 256
3. A64 2800 is 64 bit compatable making it infinity faster than a Sempron 3100 on Win XP 64 coming next month
4. A64 2800 has NX bit which prevents malice/virus
5. A64 2800 will overclock the same as sempron 3100, retaining it's performance superiority thoughout overclock.
6. A64 2800 is $8 more money or 6%

That should be $189.49. You might have missed the $4.99 shipping on the board (unless I missed a discount somewhere).

The performance diff is not that much btw P4 3C/E and semprom 3100+, but price differece is remarkable.
Some bechmarks
In this article from tomshardware (which is pro-intel most of the time), The semprom 3100+ is not so far from the P4 540 at 3.2GHz except in encoding an synthetic benchmarks.

I usually agree with all of your posts Zebo...but I have to disagree here.

1)yep...same clock speed
2)i've had both...cache only affects certain apps..in others you don't see a difference
3)64-bit...well yeah got me there
4)does the Sempy not have this? maybe you're right
5)this is where I disagree; as with all OC'ing it's YMMV...but every Sempron I've had will do 2.4-2.5 ghz with 1.6 vcore or less. I had several AX 2800's that maxed out at 2.3...of course YMMV. I know 100-200 mhz isn't THAT big of a deal...but it makes up for the difference in cache.
6)This is somewhat true...the 3100+ pricing has been very confusing. I got mine for $99 from Monarch back when the 2800+ cost $130-140. Given that price difference I'm very happy with my purchase.

If you can pick up a Sempy for < $100 it is a great great chip for the money, but yes I would suggest the 2800 as well. Just wanted to make it clear that the 3100+ is not a bad choice at all. I'm quite pleased.

Charlie there's no way you're going to convince me 3100 is a good deal. The A64 costs the same $120 to $121 both retail boxed. And you're giving up a lot by getting 3100. OEM 3100, meaning no HS costs $110 but then you got to buy a HSF negating any savings and 3 years warranty.

As far as OC YMMV, as always. Just don't get an AP 2800 and you be fine.
