This is free and a hot deal for anyone who wants to keep net servers from being overwhelmed by denial of service attacks (which most anyones pc can be used for unknowingly unless you have a good firewall which blocks these attacks). This is like free insurance for your pc.
Heres a quote that will get your attention- "The most serious of the three Windows XP vulnerabilities is the remotely exploitable buffer overflow. It is possible for an attacker to write custom exploit code that will allow them to execute commands with SYSTEM level access, the highest level of access within Windows XP."
take a minute to read the link.... thanks Infos

I happened to independently spot this a day or two ago.

I used it on an XP system - said UPnP was on and clicked to toggle off - click again to restore.

Also, tried it on a Win98SE system - said no UPnP here, not to worry.

Nice, very, very small, quick and easy.

So, is this the big security flaw that people keep saying Windows XP has?

Basicallyt the computer is always monitoring itself for new hardware additions..that is why you see the "New hardware found " bubble when you turn on the pc after installing something or why scanners(usb or firewire) are always automatically installed.

Basically all this does is turn off those services that could pose a security risk. Now to add devices, just go to the "add new hardware wizard" and it will look at that instant for hardware, not all the time like it is set to do
